Of Pardas And Wearing Sarees Without Appropriate Derriers

Poor Sushma Swaraj. She is doing all she can to make sure her ministry stays on top of things all the time. From replying to tweets to sending in rescue ops to war stricken countries to help out people, she is doing her best to keep people happy. But alas! People are picky. You cannot please everyone no matter how hard you try.

She posted a photograph with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani dressed in an onion pink plain saree – with her head covered. While I may like her in her handloom bordered sarees more than this plain one, I believe it was about maintaining decorum whilst developing positive international relations.

Her critics went ballistic on Twitter though. Of course no one cares about what the meeting means for India’s future. There were some who commented on her weight and how she ‘looked like a potato sack’. But it was bizarre the way twitterati chided her for appeasing the muslim community, for not being modern enough and disappointing the Bhakts and of course for being a regressive Hindu woman who bowed to the patriarchy of Islam.

Meh! Twitter is great example of how to make a mountain out of a molehill. By their logic she should have carried a ‘down with the Hijab’ poster to the meeting because that would have impressed the man and he would immediately sign whatever bilateral papers she meant for him to agree to. That is how it works.

Speaking of ‘how it works’ – our very own upholder of classiness, Ms Shobhaa De has been pretty busy following the Duchess of Cambridge and proving that she is not one of those who considers praising Royalty as the ‘cool thing to do’. She upheld her righteous pride as an Indian and put down every single outfit Kate wore to the numerous events during her and Prince William’s visit to the country. Plus Kate choosing to cover herself up was an insult to our very modern short skirt wearing country. Obviously she would not have chosen to cover herself up because she wanted to – she was just trying to prove that India is regressive.

In what can only be called a horrible Hinglish rant, Ms De took out every nasty remark she had jotted down in her ‘Nasty Remark Notepad’ to tell off all those gushing about Middleton’s wardrobe choices. While the gorgeous Anita Dongre dress she wore in Mumbai was summery as it could be(and it crashed her website), De was not inspired.

Nor was she impressed by the classy white mid length Emilia Wickstead she wore in Delhi. “It was the sort of dress any “take me seriously” working female professional would opt for when she goes schmoozing with the boys to local pub during happy hours.” Ugh!

References to her ‘Patli Kamar’ made me feel that the article was nothing more than a cheap potshot at Middleton. But boy was I in for more cringe-worthy words!? De goes on to thank the stars that she chose not to wear a saree – cause “A saree demands a derriere. Kate has none. Thank God, some misguided fashion guru has spared her and us so far.”

It just makes me thank god that she isn’t telling me off all the time for wearing horizontal stripes or show off my ‘fat’ arms in a sleeveless dress. We should add the ‘No derriere, no saree’ rule to all the other rules we have made up to feel bad about ourselves now.

With body shamers like her being the beacon of our country, I shouldn’t be surprised that Sushma Swaraj was shamed for doing her job.
