Breaking into modelling with no experience

Tags: modelling

Modelling is fun, glamorous, allows you to see the world and provides you with loads of opportunities. It’s a great career option, but how can you start Modelling with no experience – without the industry connections or track record needed to score fun modelling assignments? LUXE Models reveals five things you can do to break into modelling without previous experience.

Do plenty of research

At this point you know nothing about the modelling industry, so you might want to change that before doing anything else. Conduct plenty of research – look at modelling laws and wages, the best agencies to sign with and how to act at open casting calls. Also, read the LUXE Models blog for tips and advice on issues such as how to get scouted and learn the basics of making it in the industry.

Build a portfolio

Now you’ve got the basics down, let’s move on to a really important topic; your portfolio. This is a collection of modelling photographs and you’ll need one to get modelling work, so it’s vital you know how to build a portfolio. Hire a professional photographer, stylist and makeup artist; they’ll take the professional pictures your portfolio needs to catch the eye of modelling scouts and casting agents.

Choose your field to break into

Don’t go for just any modelling job you can get. There are several different types of modelling including fashion modelling (runway work), commercial print modelling (for newspapers, magazines etc.) and body part modelling (where only part of your body is photographed e.g. hand). Pick your discipline so you can focus all your efforts on scoring your first gig rather than spreading yourself too thin.

Practise, practise, practise

Modelling is an art form, so practise as much if you can if you want to get good at it and start a career. This’ll depend on what kind of work you’re trying to score – for example if you’re looking to strut the runways of London or New York, practise your walk. If print modelling is your chosen area, practise posing in front of your mirror. The more you practise, the more likely you’ll be to earn the attention of a scout and become a model!

Grow a thick skin

LUXE Models recently talked about the character traits you need to become a model. Resilience is vital, because when you’re starting out you’ll hear the word no from agencies and scouts over and over. With no experience, you’re even more likely to hear the word no, so it’s really important you grow a thick skin to ensure you don’t let rejection stop you from making your dreams come true!

Break into modelling with your eyes open

Most importantly, if you want to break into modelling with no experience, you need to go into the industry with your eyes wide open. It takes time, patience, commitment and above all resilience to make it in modelling. Don’t expect to be chosen to front a massive campaign at your first open casting call – put the effort in so eventually, you’ll be handed a modelling opportunity that could change your life!
