Five Things You Should Know Before Becoming A Male Model

If you become a Male Model, you can meet creative people and build an amazing career. But before you enter the exciting world of male modelling, you should ensure that you have the knowledge you need to succeed. Here are five things you should know before becoming a male model.

Unusual schedule

The Telegraph argues that male modelling is not a nine-to-five job. There may be times where you go long periods without a job and then, several may come in at once, requiring you to work a lot. You may have to cancel plans, like birthdays, at the drop of a hat, should a job come in. Ensure your loved ones know this before you break into male modelling, so you can maintain a healthy social life.

Looks and personality

As a male model, your looks matter. Invest in grooming measures and exercise to stay handsome. If you’re signed to a top modelling agency, don’t change things like you hair without telling them, as this could impact on a campaign they’ve negotiated for you, costing them serious money. Also get plenty of rest, especially when taking part in hectic fashion weeks, to ensure you always look your best.

While looks matter, your personality does as well. Modelling agencies, designers and photographers will cast you aside, if they believe that you’re difficult to work with. You should be confident, but prepared to take constructive criticism and work hard, so your campaigns are successful. It’s also essential that as a male model, you’re kind and warm, so that people actually enjoy working with you.

Limited sightseeing

Yes, if you become one of the next male modelling success stories, like David Gandy, you’ll get to see the world. But shoots are usually so fast-paced. You’ll travel to your location, do one or two-day sessions and leave, so that doesn’t leave much time for sightseeing. You will become quite skilled at sightseeing from the back of a cab though. Plus production teams often look for out-of-the-way locations for shoots, so as a male model, you’ll get to experience the hidden gems of your destinations.

Last minute prep

The ability to adapt is so important. You never know when a job will come in and often, you won’t know where you’re going until the last minute. In other words, you will need to be able to pack in a hurry to fly off to far-off destinations at the drop of a hat. You’ll also have to master the art of getting dressed in the back of a car/train restroom, so you can get to unusual shoot locations quickly.

For all ages

Modelling isn’t just a young man’s game. There are campaigns that look to appeal to men of all ages, from teenage boys to silver haired foxes. As you grow older and your body fills out, you’ll gradually transition to modelling jobs for more mature men. Do remember though that brands have different requirements and whatever age you are, you just might not be right for their target audience.

Grab your opportunities

No matter who you are, there is a male modelling job out there for you, as long as you are willing to work hard and seize any opportunity that comes your way. We would suggest that you start by building a portfolio, so you can display your potential to top modelling agencies.
