5 Creative Ways You Can Paint Your House Like a Professional

Painting your House can revamp its beauty and appeal. Fresh Paint colors can revitalize a seemingly boring home design. The best part of painting your house is that you can do it yourself if you want to. This can bring out the creativity in you just like commercial painting contractors. However, if you don’t do your research well before you begin the project, you might be spending more than you ought to be especially when you are not too careful in the painting process.

DIY house painting is probably the most popular do-it-yourself home projects to improve your house. The materials are easy to acquire, you already have the basic knowledge and skills, and it is an affordable way to revive an old room or the entire house. Anyone able can perform this task if you have the right skill set, patience, practice and initial research on how to paint your walls properly.

Here are five creative ways of painting your house. By doing some of these tips,  you can achieve a professional quality finish, without having to pay a fortune.

Start by preparing the wall surface

Every professionally painted wall begins with a well-prepared wall surface. You must first get rid of old paint, wallpapers, dust and other debris that may have been attached on the wall. Scrape the walls, sand it, patch it and fill in every visible crack, dents or hole, and any wall imperfection. This might be tiring to do, but this is the most important part of painting a wall. Regardless of what type, cost, quality of paint or what brand you may use if your wall is not well cleaned and prepared; these impurities will still show on the final result.

Tint the primer

Paint primers are an important part of house painting. It is necessary to tint the primer whenever you decide to paint walls and ceilings, over darker colors or dry walls. A paint primer does these three benefits to your wall:

  • It prevents stains from seeping through the paint.
  • It permits one-coat paint coverage.
  • It enhances paint adhesion that reduces paint peeling and blisters later on.

Professional painters will usually mix the top coat paint into the tinted primer towards the finished color. This allows the ability of the top paint coat to completely hide the primed surface. There are ready-made, pre-mixed paint with primers but nothing is as effective as much as a dedicated paint primer.

Protect your floors from drips

When doing house painting, it is inevitable to have some drips on the floor or worse over your carpet. This is expected especially when you do it yourself paint the walls. Plastic can protect drips on your floor or carpet. But canvass cloth is also an inexpensive method in preserving your floor from paint drips. The canvass is exceptionally durable and resistant to rip compared to plastic. It absorbs paints and reduces tripping and slipping hazards.

Canvas cloth can absorb paint drips and do not become slippery when spattered with paint like the plastic lining. Plus canvass can be folded on the areas that need be that it is impossible to do when you use plastic lining. Most plastic drop cloths end up in the garbage after use. This can prove environmentally hazardous. Canvas cloth lining will last a   long time.

When worse comes to worst that your carpet gets smudged with paint, the do-it-yourself method may or may not work in lifting off the paint off of the carpet fibers. You may need a professional carpet cleaning company to properly remove the stains while preserving the integrity of your carpet. Professional carpet cleaners have the right tools, equipment and solvents to remove all kinds of stains from all types of carpet materials.

Use an extension pole and a paint grid

Painting your house becomes easier when you use an extension pole for your paint roller. You can skip using the step ladder if you incorporate a telescoping extension pole. Extension poles come in different lengths. Most poles can be extended to as much as 18 feet. When you choose an extension pole for your paint rollers, choose a pole that can be extended 18-36 inches. This is the average length to reach 8-9 feet tall ceilings.

When looking for an extension pole for your paint roller, inspect the one that has a non-slip grip, soft handle, and sturdy metal core. Look for the end of the pole, it should be made of metal because plastic materials are too flexible that makes it difficult to control. Check your paint roller design; the handle should have a threaded hole in the end. Twist it onto the extension pole so you can start painting higher walls and ceilings in your house.

Also, use a paint grid when dipping your roller into the tray. You need this grid to avoid messy rolling of paint from a paint tray. A paint grid is a rectangular, sturdy plastic or metal that can latch on the edge of a bucket. Fill the bucket with paint until halfway through, hang the grid in the bucket. Start dipping the roller sleeve into the paint, roll it against the rectangular paint grid to eliminate excess paint. This can make your DIY house painting more manageable and lesser messy drips.

Overnight storage

House painting cannot be a one-day affair especially when you are painting the entire house. You will have to store your paint somewhere so you can use them again the next day. The traditional way of storing the paint includes cleaning your paint brushes and paint roller sleeves. But there is an easier and faster way to store your paint and painting materials.

Simply roll or brush off the excess paint and tightly wrap them in plastic cling wrap, the ones they use to wrap food will do. You can double up the plastic wrapper to remove any trapped air. Place your plastic-wrapped roller sleeves and brushes inside the refrigerator to keep them fresh. This method prevents the paint from drying overnight so you can easily resume and reuse your painting tools the next day.

When you are up and ready to DIY house painting again the next day, remove your wrapped roller sleeves and brushes out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before you are going to use them. This will warm them up and prepare them for use. If you perfect this method of preserving brushes and rollers, you can reuse these tools several days if you are really ambitious with your house painting projects.
