Forget quinoa, bulger or couscous. We’ve found out about a brand new superfood, Freekeh, that touts impressive qualities which rivals current popular grains.
Freekeh is actually a green wheat that differs from other grains because of the way that it’s harvested. When young, the crop is harvested and then roasted. Australia’s CSIRO Health Science and Nutrition Department has done analysis on the grain and found that the younger harvesting period produces a grain with higher Fibre Content. As wheats mature, their fibre, mineral and protein content decreases, rendering them less valuable as compared to Freekeh. If you think brown rice was healthy, get ready to be blown off your seat. Freekeh has about 3 times the amount of fibre as brown rice and almost twice that of quinoa!
Freekeh is also a fantastic choice for individuals who are interested in losing weight as its high fibre content makes the stomach feel full for longer. Because it takes longer to digest, hunger won’t creep up on yuo as often, making it easier to regulate how often your meals occur. Not only does having a high fibre content aid in maintaining a sense of fullness, it also helps to improve bowel health and cleanliness. The fibres help to remove all waste from bowels, leaving them clean for future digestion.
Besides having a high fibre content, freekeh also has a low glycemic index ranking, making this grain a good choice for diabetics that still want to eat something that’s heavier than just vegetables all the time. It also has a low fat content making it easy to consume large quantities without going overboard on your daily fat intake values.
Because freekeh is harvested at such an early stage of its maturation, its flavor retains grassy notes. Though its roasting process has been noticed to leave behind a smokiness which disappears when cooked with other foods. So you’re left with a delicious dish that’s tasty and healthy!
