Beauty Hacks: Baking Soda Edition

When we think of Baking Soda we either think of elementary science fairs with volcanoes or cakes. Okay, maybe just cakes. But did you know that this simple baking ingredient that helps cakes rise has so many other uses? Here are some easy and quick ways to incorporate more of this magic powder into your life. It will definitely save you time and money.

1. Help Treat Yellow Nails

You just need: 1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with 2 1/2 tablespoons of baking Soda, apply to your nails for 3 minutes and rinse. You can also skip the hydrogen peroxide and apply to your cuticles to help soften them.

2. Clarify Your Hair

Simply add a little bit of baking soda to your shampoo and shampoo regularly. The baking soda will help with gunk that has built up because of styling products. All that hairspray, wax, mousse, gel, etc. weighs your hair down. Get rid of that for more voluminous hair.

3. Foot Soak

No time to go to the spa? Have a weird thing with not wanting others to see your feet? Tired of paying too much for pedicures? Give yourself a spa day at home by soaking your piggies in 2-3 tablespoons of warm water for 20 minutes.

4. Clean Your Combs and Makeup Brushes

You can use this for all your hairbrushes as well as makeup brushes. For hairbrushes and combs, soak them in 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 cup of warm water, rinse with regular water and pat dry. For makeup brushes, work the mixture through the bristles, rinse with regular water and pat dry.

5. Deodorize Smelly Shoes

Say goodbye to smelly shoes. Just put some baking soda into little baggies and sit them in your shoes. Easy, right?

6. Neutralize Bad Breath

Neutralize bad breath not just cover it up. Mix 1 teaspoon baking soda in a glass of water, swish it around in your mouth, spit and then rinse with regular water.

7. Exfoliate That Body

Stop spending more money than you need to. Exfoliate your body with 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. This is a gentle exfoliation that you can use daily or add brown sugar for extra exfoliation.

8. Refresh Your Room

Here is a simple and easy air freshener you can make at home. Just add your favourite essential oil to baking soda and put into a spray bottle to mist. Easy and Cheap. Just how we like it.

9. Freshen Your Closet

Freshen your closet by placing an open box (or put some baking soda in a cute jar) in your wardrobe to keep your fabrics fresh and odors at bay. Add your scent of choice for an extra boost. Cinnamon, lavender? It’s up to you and your senses!

10. Whiten Teeth

Whiten your pearlies by brushing your teeth with toothpaste dipped in a little bit of baking soda or you could mix baking soda with a bit of water until it forms a paste. Here are more ways you can whiten your teeth.

11. Dry Shampoo

Stop spending your hard earned money on dry shampoo. They are convenient for when you can’t wash your hair but chances are, you already have what you need to make your own dry shampoo at home. Simply sprinkle some baking soda on your head and work into the scalp. Start off with just a little bit and work more in as needed.

12. DIY Deodorant

Simply mix 4 tablespoons with your favourite essential oil, put in a container and powder under your arms. Instead of just powdering your nose in the washroom, powder your pits to stay fresh.

Tell us:

What do you use your baking soda for? Besides obviously cakes and erupting volcanoes.
