Skinny Obsessed? “I just want to be skinny”

“… but I just want to be skinny”

From your favourite Trendy Fit columnist: Steph

If you would have asked me 10 years ago about what I want from my Body, I would for sure have told you “to be skinny!’ This is what we are told, what we are exposed to and mainly all a girl knows from the time she is very young.

Even as a young girl, I always had in the back of my mind: stay in sports… to stay skinny, keep with dancing… to stay skinny. Today I think of this word and I CRINGE. Skinny is not healthy my friends; to be FIT and strong is the new skinny.

As women, we are moulded to want to keep our bodies a certain weight, aim for that magic number: “I want to be 120 lbs!” I don’t know about you guys but I am a tall girl and at almost 5’9″, there would be something seriously wrong if I was 120 lbs! Don’t just pick a number!

So, here it is, my NEWEST health secret (let’s call it my trendy fit philosophy) that I’m going to share with all of you right now, memorize it: less pounds do not equal greater happiness. In all of my life, whenever I was constantly monitoring a scale I was never happy with the result. When I worried more about making sure I did something active that day or what I fuelled my body with, weight loss then became a by-product. Our new goal that will move from a “current trend” to a “way of life” for future generations is to think about making your body healthy, strong, fit and active (which is easier than you think- try this). NOT skinny.

After years and years of learning to try and love my body I have reached a conclusion, skinny is ugly. And I don’t mean that literally as in thin guys and girls can never be beautiful.  I mean that for everything the word “skinny” stands for. This word is what is wrong with the generation we live in today.

For every girl that skips a meal, counts every single calorie, avoids social situations (because I’ve been there!) drop the word skinny from your vocabulary.  Your NEW goal is to make healthy changes in your life, be strong, be active and be fit! Your health is what is going to take you places in life, not the number on the scale. Your healthy mind promotes your healthy body!
