DIY Sock Bun

Buns are a girl’s go-to style for so many occasions – from having a lazy day, to attending a business meeting, the bun has got your back (literally). The Sock bun is a more cleaned up version of a bun and is appropriate for more professional events, but also looks chic for everyday styling as well. You can go out and buy those fancy sock bun tools to create this look, or you can make TWO sock buns buddies for the price of $1.25, plus tax (I found this pair of socks from the local dollar store). Today’s tutorial will demonstrate how to create a DIY sock bun, as well as how to use it!

Loading the player …

Get a sock.

I bought this pair from the local dollar store for just over a dollar. I chose out thin socks because my hair is thicker and longer. If you have shorter or thinner hair, go for a thicker sock to give you that volume that you desire in your bun.

Roll the sock.

Roll the sock up nice and tight! Roll a few times, then pull the end of the sock to make sure it is tight.

Cut off the end of the sock.

Cut off the closed end of the sock and continue to roll it all up.

It should look a little something like this!

And now how to use it in your hair…

Gather your hair into a ponytail

Place it where you want your sock bun to sit. I like it at the top back of my head (but not sitting on top of my head!).

Slightly damp hair is easier to work with.

I like to spritz a bit of water to make it easier to work with. My hair is fairly silky, so having a bit of water gives it some grip and gives it a smoother finish with less flyaways.

Comb through.

For a more professional look, use a comb to smooth it all out. If you want a more casual/messy look, skip this step.

Place sock bun around the end of the ponytail.

You want to start your sock bun near the end of your ponytail, but not completely at the bottom (or it will be hard to roll up!). I would suggest about 3/4 of the way down your ponytail. You then want to split your hair in half so it is easier to roll.

It should look something like this.

Tip: To tighten the bun, pull the whole bun upwards, and then roll it down again. Repeat until desire shape is achieved.

Finished!
