DIY Repurposed Drawer

Those of us who are parents know that storage comes at a premium so it’s important to use every nook and cranny at your disposal to the max. Case in point; under the bed is not just for dust bunnies, lost socks, or even hiding anymore. It’s wasted space that, if used wisely, can serve as ample extra storage – especially in the kid’s room! I repurposed an old spare Drawer into a storage bin on wheels. It fits perfectly under the bed and is easily accessible, even for the tiniest of hands.

This vintage-looking, Diy Repurposed Drawer didn’t start so much as ‘vintage’ as it did ‘old’ and definitely dated. When I turned the dresser into an entertainment center, I stored this extra drawer in the garage, hoping to give it life again on some other DIY project later on. The perfect revival would be in my son’s room where with his endless amount of toys and clothes, there is never enough storage.

DIY Repurposed Drawer for Under the Bed Storage

Materials:

– Old Drawer: some vintage shops will sell these, or you can grab one off of an old ratty dresser (Craigslist  is a gold mine).
– Paint: I used Americana Chalky Finish paint, for easy application and fast results.
– Paint brush
– Casters (buy according the size of your drawer)
– Drill
– Clear polyurethane (fast drying, in a satin finish)
– Optional: new knobs!

Directions:

Decide whether you want to paint the inside (my drawer had a liner on the inside that worked with the paint so I left it as is).
This type of paint requires no prep at all, so start with a squeaky clean surface, and apply a thin coat of the chalky finish paint. The original finish will show underneath, which is perfect for a worn, vintage look. If you are using regular paint, be sure to prep and prime as usual.

After the paint is dry (about 30 minutes or so), finish with a thin coat of polyurethane, let it dry.
Change the knobs.
Turn the drawer over, and screw in the casters with your drill.
Fill your new storage bin with all of your extras and wheel it under the bed!

You can also place it in an open area if you like, it’s the perfect height for toddlers to reach in for small toys!

An easy solution to make the most out of every space in your home; a repurposed drawer!
