Cringeworthy Fashion Trends from the Past

Fashion is always changing. One minute trends are super hot, and then after a few seasons, absolutely Cringeworthy. As you go farther back in time, the weirder trends seem to get. You think, how could people ever have thought these were fashionable? Here are some of the best (worst) Cringeworthy Fashion trends from the past.

Beehive Hair

Even the name coaxes cringeworthy chills. The beehive is the familiar hairstyle of Marge Simpson, the ultimate style icon. It’s the coaxing of “maximum volume out of minimum hair“. While once the symbol of elegance and refinery, looking back, it just feels really unnatural. While commonplace before, now it would definitely attract weird stares.

It kind of just looks like an overly extravagant tower of heaped hair — hard, stiff, dull hair. While it may not be cringeworthy fashion, its undoubtedly cringeworthy.

Neon Leggings

Neon pink, Neon yellow, neon green, neon blue skintight leggings. Through our modern, minimalist lens, it feels way too loud and way too showy. And if you thought it couldn’t get any worse, other variations of solid neon include zebra rainbow neon, leopard print neon, and shiny light reflecting neon. Gross.

In the 70’s/80’s disco age, they were all about those neon legs. If that’s not a Cringeworthy Fashion Trend, I don’t know what is.

High Waisted Bell-Bottoms

Oh, the hippies, bless them. They loved their bell-bottoms, the pants with the huge flares at the calves. They’re basically leg skirts. Looking back from today, they’re at absolute odds with our preference for skinny jeans.

And then the disco age brought in the high waisted version. Shiny shimmering pants, bells that flared and swished as you danced. Yes, this is cringeworthy fashion.

Fringed Vests

The brown suede fringed vests — if you’re trying to go for the sexy cowboy western look, this is an essential piece. Pair it with some light wash jeans, a white puffy shirt, and a hat. This was a super popular (cringeworthy fashion) look for cowpokes and city girls alike, back in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Tie-Dye

Psychedelically cringeworthy fashion trend: tie-dye. Who was the smart guy who thought it’d look nice to colour shirts in rainbow swirls? And not make it exclusively for children? It’s looks like someone spilled Kool-Aid all over your shirt. Albeit in a calculated and artsy way.

There’s just too much going on, too many colours, too many patterns. Let’s be real, it just strains your brain and stresses you out.

Workout Clothes

Lycra, and tracksuits, and leotards oh my! People in the 70’s loved sporting fitness wear (pun intended) on an everyday basis. And it’s not because they particularly loved working out or anything. Grocery shopping? Time to whip out the leotard. School? Let’s find that matching tracksuit set. Whether it was because of the stretchiness, the ostentatious shiny colours, or because they loved framing the crotch areas, I don’t know. But it was popular.

Talk about cringeworthy fashion.
