Things to Keep in Mind When Looking for a Roommate

So you’re starting to venture into the real world which means it’s time to move out of your parents home. The problem is, you really haven’t secured your dream career yet and can’t Afford that condo you’ve been lusting after. The only real space you can afford is a grungy old basement in a sketchy part of town which is not okay. So you decide on the bright idea that you’re going to get a Roommate. You’ll have double the money to work with which means a nicer space. Looking for a roommate can’t be that hard. Right? Yes and no. You might get more than you bargain for so keep these things in mind when you’re looking for a roommate.

1. Make sure they’re not a serial killer.

You should probably avoid all Craigslist advertisements and random strangers at all costs. Even people you’ve met once at a party shouldn’t make the list of potential roomies. Unless you’re a Serial Killer yourself, the odds of someone else being one is greater. You should probably just assume everyone is a serial killer unless proven otherwise.

2. Make sure they have a job that can afford the rent.

If your rent is going to cost $2000 a month, you better make sure they can afford to put in $1000 every month. Their part time job at McD’s is definitely not going to cut it. If you sign a lease with someone that can’t afford it, not only will they get kicked out, but so will you. Your landlord won’t care if it’s just your roommate that hasn’t paid. They just want their money.

3. Consider meeting their friends beforehand.

Chances are their friends will come over and you have to be able to tolerate them. You should probably meet them just to make sure they’re not serial killers either. They could be loud and obnoxious or just plain creepy. So make sure you are able to mesh with them on a somewhat civil level. You don’t want to walk into your living space one day to find them doing a seance or something.

4. Make sure they have a different diet than yours.

This one is important if you’re a foodie like me and not used to sharing. Make sure the food you eat isn’t what they like too. Otherwise you might find yourself coming home to an empty fridge. If all else fails, just put a mini fridge and other snacks in your room. Don’t forget to lock your doors!

5. Ask what their typical day/weekend is like.

AKA find out how late they stay up/out until. If they run on a completely opposite schedule than you, that could be fine if they’re quiet. But if they’re one of those people that can’t help slamming things, blasting music at night and comes home drunk every other day, you might need to keep looking. (Unless you’re okay with dealing with vomit and other bodily fluids).

6. Establish boundaries.

Find out if they have a boyfriend. If yes, proceed with caution. They might do stuff in places you don’t particularly want to know about so make sure you tell them that you aren’t comfortable with that. Also, it’s good to ask if they plan on inviting them over all the time and if he’s practically living there, he better be willing to put up rent too.

7. Ask to see their current living situation.

This may sound a little creepy but whatever. This will help you gauge how clean they are. If their current space looks like a hot mess, chances are, your place with them will look like that too. If you’re a neat person by nature, don’t move in with someone with a less than stellar cleaning record. You’ll end up cleaning after them because the mess will give you anxiety and end up resenting them for it. You are not their mom. Let someone else deal with their mess.
