You Tried: Cocacola Introduces “Healthy” Coke Life

Tags: coke coke life

This reminds me of when Dr. Pepper tried to make “Dr. Pepper 10” a thing. So apparently, Coca-cola has been relentlessly trying to turn their bad publicity around with “Coke Life”, the healthier version of Coke. Their decline in soda sales stems from science and research linking the consumption of Coke with obesity and major health issues. This new beverage released in Argentina and Chile last year and is supposed to make its debut in the UK. There has been no release date for America yet probably because “moderation” isn’t exactly what Americans do best. It’s also wrapped in bright green packaging because apparently green means healthy.

What the hell is Coke Life? Basically, it’s a “low-cal” alternative to regular Coke, with 89 calories per can, which is about 50 calories less than OG coke. While regular Coke is sweetened with corn syrup (a lot of it) and Diet Coke is sweetened with aspartame (yikes), Coke Life is sweetened with the ever-so-trendy Stevia, a kinda sorta natural sweetener. But it still contains the equivalent of 4 teaspoons of sugar (which is a lot of sugar).

Unless you’re living under a rock, you would know that Stevia is the new sugar. It has 0 calories and is 200 times sweeter than sugar. Unlike other sugar substitutes, Stevia is actually derived from a plant. It grows in Brazil and Paraguay and has been used to sweeten foods for hundreds of years. I mean if it’s an Ancient South American sweetener, it shouldn’t be dangerous for your health, right?

However, slightly better for you junk food is still junk food. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar for women per day, and 9 teaspoons for men. Moreover, any kind of diet soda is bad. Reputable research has linked the consumption of artificial sweetener (like Stevia or Truvia) to obesity and weight gain. Doesn’t make a lick of sense, but the reason may be because artificial sweetener makes the body crave more real sugar and causes the subject to overeat.

Maybe at the next party, Coke Life might be your “health-conscious” chaser but I really doubt the 50 calories you save from drinking it will put a dent in obesity. Whether it’s Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, or Coke Life, pick your poison.

Would Coke Life thrive if it ever came to North America?
