So you may or may not have SOS (shiny object syndrome) but as a girl, we can’t help but to be drawn to all things that glitter (except for Mariah Carey’s ‘Glitter” circa 2001). Jewelry is just one way which we indulge in pretty, shiny, Statement pieces. The statement necklace has become a staple in every girl’s accessory collection and we aren’t at all surprised. Just be careful when you wear your fave piece; make sure you are the one that is wearing it, and it isn’t drowning you.

1. Keep it simple.

It’s likely that your statement piece is going to be the star of your show the day you wear it. So why would you outshine it with something else in your outfit? Build your outfit around your statement necklace and remember keep it simple. Don’t under-estimate what a plain t-shirt, jeans and cardigan can do. Your statement necklace will bring the entire look more put together. Other basics to try it with: a chambray shirt or a knit pull over sweater.

2. Be aware of your earrings.

Or any other jewelry for that matter. The last thing you want is to be looking like you tried too hard to accessorize. If you are wearing a large statement necklace, keep the earrings small and subtle, like a pair of crystal or pearl studs. It will be too much if you wear large or statement earrings as well. If you are looking to accessorize further, go for rings and bracelets instead. They are far enough from your necklace and can even balance out the look.

3. Know your neckline.

Yes, Statement Necklaces are all sparkly and fun, but make sure you know the right neckline to pair them up with. Not all statement necklaces will work with all necklines. Go through your pieces and know exactly what goes with what outfit to save time in the mornings. Statement necklaces will highlight the neckline and make your statement even bolder than before. 4. Dress it Up.

The statement necklace is one of the easiest (and prettiest) ways to dress up a plain outfit. Going out? Pop a statement necklace onto a LBD to class it up if you need more than just a simple cocktail dress. Looking for something more casual? Wear one with a graphic t-shirt to give a little more class and appear that you put a little more effort in (it’s okay, we won’t tell!)

5.  Learn to Layer

Layering necklaces the new trend right now, but don’t think you need to stop when it comes to statement necklaces. Try wearing two together to make your pieces stand out even more. You’ll be surprised of the cohesiveness that two necklaces can give. You may as well take a risk and go all out if you really want to make a statement and a lasting impression.
