“Eating Clean”- WTH Does That Mean?

“Eating Clean… wth does that even mean?”

From your favourite Trendy Fit columnist: Steph

If you haven’t noticed lately, Health trends seem to be coming and going in and out of style as often as the latest fashions. Every other week you hear about the newest Doctor coming out with the next fad Diet that will cure all of your health and wellness woes. The same goes for fitness, everyone has that new 30 minute workout that will make you more fit in half the time! This is getting way too complicated isn’t it?

Let’s put fitness aside for a second, and focus on food. Many of us struggle on what are the best and also proper things to eat, and often look to someone to just tell us exactly what to eat to make us healthy, (hence the explosion of new books on the latest diets). Maybe you’ve been hearing all about “eating clean” as much as I have lately? But what does this mean? To clarify, this is simply an old concept with a new name. We are going back to the basics here people!

Clean eating is simply removing from your diet all the processed, fatty and fake foods that you would find away from the exterior aisles of your Grocery Store. When you are eating clean this means less meat, less alcohol, less sugar, less sodium and adding whole grains (quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat), nothing “white” (flour, rice, bread, etc). Basically, it’s eating with common sense. We should know by now that when we walk into a grocery store, the best items are around the perimeter aisles. This is where you find all the colourful, healthy options; it’s as soon as you start wondering into those middle aisles where the temptation occurs and “clean-eating-sabotage” occurs!

A few years ago, I participated in a 10-week health challenge that from day one I was prompted to remove sugar, wheat and dairy right out of my diet. (Poof, gone!) I know what you’re thinking because I thought it too: impossible! Yes, the first 3 days were hard but the truth is, after that it became so much easier because of how it made me feel, not to mention how it helped my mindset about weight gain.  Taking away all of the processed items improved: a) my creativity when it came to preparing meals and b) my overall health. After the 10 weeks I tried to introduce these items back into my diet and I could immediately feel the difference in my body. To this day I still limit my intake on these 3 items because living and eating without them had improved my health so much. This is my version of eating clean. This is what works for me, but may not be realistic for everyone. Start with realistic goals for yourself, you know you better then anyone! Start with something as simple as cutting out anything “white” from your diet and begin to listen to what your body is telling you. Trust me, you will feel the difference from even this small change!

Here a little trick that I will share with you before I go. While standing in line a few days ago at the grocery store, I overheard a father talking to his sons about 6 and 8 in age, about the vegetables on the counter they were waiting to pay for. He quizzed his sons “These items will go bad after a few days so what does that mean?” In unison they replied: “Then it’s good for you.”  So here is your trick to remember to eating clean right out of the mouth of today’s youngster’s: If it can go bad, it’s good for you. Words to live by!
