Gotham: Premiere Highlights and Flops

Batman series without…Batman??! Is that even possible? Yes it is apparently and it’s actually quite good. For all those die hard comic fan devotees out there, give the show a chance before you write it off as another spin off for cash. For those who aren’t sure if it’s worth watching or know what all the hype is about, here’s a brief summary. SPOILER ALERT: happenings in the first episode of Gotham.

Background:

This show focuses around Commissioner James Gordon’s rise in Gotham city. Played by OC’s resident bad boy, Ben McKenzie, we find a rough around the edges guy who is determined to restore his beloved city back to it’s original “pure state”. We have characters such as a Young Catwoman, young Bruce Wayne, young Penguin, so just about young everyone to show their development and struggles. Gordon must fight against the troubled police force and deal with the organized crime that haunts his city. It’s a “how it all started” and why the Dark Knight was needed.

Show Highlights:

The premiere kicks off the entire series with the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne leaving their troubled son Bruce Wayne to face the world with his trusty butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Enter James Gordon, new partner and mentee to Harvey Bullock, a rough GCPD detective gone sour. They spend time together scoping the city’s darkest corners for a lead on this high profiled case with a final breakthrough. Unfortunately, the whole thing was a set up.

You find out near the end of the episode that Falcone, Gotham’s most famous mafia boss is running the “organized crime” show and feeding the citizens a story with the Wayne murder. The story is just getting riled up with tons of eager lackeys who want to throw him off his throne including the ruthless Fish Mooney as played by Jada Pink Smith and “Penguin”, classic villain in the comic series.

The episode is packed with a lot of violence, depressing moments and twisted characters but that’s the stuff we all love to watch. It ends with Gordon asking young Bruce to give him another chance to track down the real murderer so so the drama continues.

Also, did I mention that Gordon quietly spares Penguin life and in turn the creepy guy winds up with a thirst for revenge? But you already knew that from following the comics.

Cons:

– The scenes  move way too quickly, not allowing viewers to digest any character properly

– Ben McKenzie has a bit of work to do when controlling his facial expressions…some very awkward

– Catwoman is seen crouching in every scene she’s in. We get it, she’s agile.

Pros:

– No creepy monotone Batman voice, instead you have a good-looking kid who is learning life can be a biatch after the sudden murder of his parents.

– Enter a young Catwoman and you can look forward to a developing love story?

– Amazingly detailed scene work, the city was set in darkness without a blue patch of sky anywhere to be found. These secrets of the streets of Gotham are here. Depicted the sinister, chaos of the city in need of a hero well.

– Ben Mckenzie is clearly putting in the work to make it all seem real

“Fear doesn’t need conquering, it tells you where the edge is.” Will you tune into the next episode?
