Its older and better-known big brother – thanks to a certain Mr. Bond – gets all the attention but in many important ways the DB4 is the defining model that created the modern Aston Martin legend. And when RM Sotheby’s rings the bell on its annual London sale in September, full evidence of the fact will be on display in the form of three iconic DB4’s set to cross the auction block. Leading the pack is a rare, original and hugely desirable DB4GT, along with a stunning late-production DB4 Series V Convertible and a three-owner-from-new DB4 Series II Coupé. | The DB4GT, made in strictly limited numbers from 1959 to 1963, was the vehicle that helped usher in the era of the “gentleman racer” in the late 1950s. The competition-variant of the already famed DB4, introduced in September 1959 at the London Motor Show, was based on the race-winning prototype, DP199/1. Developed for increased performance, the Newport Pagnell factory made the car slightly shorter, lighter and more powerful than the production DB4. It’s estimated at up to $3.2 million. The 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Convertible is an equally rare bird, one of just 70 examples built, aiming for $1.4 million. And the Series II? Simply a steal at $675,000… |
