The theme song for the popular 1990s sitcom Friends famously begins “So no one told you life was gonna be this way.” Many millennials — upon watching the show for the first time on Netflix or in syndication — are singing a different tune: “So no one told me Friends was gonna be this way.” CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP

Why? Because upon looking at the series from the vantage of today, it is, well, more than a little problematic. Instead of being amused by Phoebe’s timeless classic “Smelly Cat” or the fact that Joey doesn’t share food, millennials are blown away by how poorly some aspects of the show hold up in 2018.

There’s casual homophobia, troubling power dynamics (the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements wouldn’t come for decades), and the almost total lack of diversity.

The show, which made megastars out of Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry,  and David Schwimmer. Friends ran in the United States from 1994 — 2004, but lives on in syndication and on streaming sites.

Now a new generation of people are getting into the show, watching it on streaming sites like Netflix. Makes sense because it was a HUGE show and still has a large following.

But, people are finding Friends to actually be really bad. Here’s why:
