EXPLORING NAXOS IN SKECHERS

Tags: naxos village

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades islands and is less known compared to its famous neighbors — Mykonos and Santorini. A historical island blessed with a fertile land, Naxos is dotted with enchanting villages, ancient walking paths and isolated beaches. Passion for Greece founder and travel blogger Elena Sergeeva spent a week exploring Naxos in her Skech-Air – Infinity sneakers; here is what she experienced.

Chora of Naxos

The capital and main harbor of Naxos known as Chora has managed to preserve its traditional flair. An imposing Venetian castle dominates the highest point of the capital. Spend some hours getting lost in the picturesque cobbled alleys. Discover the pretty doors and windows, the blooming bougainvilleas and the friendly Naxian cats along the way.

The main harbor of Naxos is perfect for scenic seaside walks where you will come across the sailing boats which moor here before continuing their voyage. Here you will find a plethora of local stores, cafes and restaurants that stretch across the harbor.

Follow the long paved road which leads to the northern part of Chora to witness the most memorable sunset from the landmark of Naxos — the famous Portara translating as big door, the only evidence of the unfinished Temple of Apollo, god of sun and music.

Hiking on Naxos

Naxos is heaven for the outdoor enthusiasts. Those who greatly enjoy outdoor activities must definitely go hiking on Naxos. One morning I put my Skechers gear on and went to explore one of the most popular hiking trails, Kurunochori or Seven Villages walk with a local expert — Stella Korre.

During the four-hour hiking tour we visited the two Kouros statues which date back to the 6th century B.C., learned about the fascinating local flora and fauna of Naxos, toured the island’s marble queries and walked the ancient marble trails.

Villages of Naxos

One of the highlights of Naxos is its quaint villages. The 45 villages of Naxos all have their own unique charm – but the most picturesque are Halki and Apiranthos. When visiting Halki, visit the Vallindras Distilleryto to try the locally produced citron liquor known as kitron.

The village of Apiranthos was originally settled by Cretans and to this day, you will come across the Cretan dialect spoken by the locals. Walk the narrow paved mule tracks covered by archways and marvel at the untouched architecture which dates back to the Venetian times.

Temple of Demeter

Naxos is a sacred island and is also home to the Temple of Demeter, the ancient goddess of earth fertility. According to the ancient Greek mythology it is here that Pluto placed the abducted Mother and Daughter. Persephone was taken to the netherworld and thus symbolizes the cycle of seasons.  At the beginning of autumn, when the seeds of the old crop are laid on the fields, Persephone ascends and is reunited with her mother Demeter.

This magnificent temple made of the finest Naxian white marble dates back to 530-520 BC. It is located in the village of Ano Sangri.

Culinary Delights on Naxos

Due to its fertile land, Naxos is known for its rich production of olives, grapes, figs, citrus fruit and the famous Naxian potatoes. One of the best places to try the potatoes is at Popi’s Grill, a traditional family-run taverna, one of the oldest on the island which opened in 1948.

Today the taverna is operated by the fourth generation of the Margaritis family. It’s no surprise that one of the owners, Georgia was also wearing Skechers shoes!

Popi’s Grill is located on the harbor of Naxos overlooking the boats and the sea. Here you can enjoy fresh fish, grilled meats, the fantastic Naxian grilled cheese called saganaki, delicious Greek style burgers biftekia made by Georgia and the best Moussaka you will ever have! All of the vegetables are grown on the family’s farm. The olive oil and wine are also produced by the Margaritis family. A true farm-to-fork experience.

Trekking Naxos in Skechers

Exploring Naxos in my Skechers was a perfect and comfortable choice.

The Skech-Air infinity shoes feature an air-cushioned heel that supported my feet while hiking the trails and walking around Chora. The air-cooled memory foam allowed my feet to breathe, in spite of the warm island weather.
