Wet Shaving and Living Green

Wet Shaving is popular for more reasons that you’d expect. Not only is this time tested method the best way to get a close shave with the least amount of irritation, as well as an economically friendly way to keep cash in your wallet, Wet Shaving has many benefits that make the earth happy, too.

Reduce Waste with Wet Shaving

In the US alone, two billion plastic disposable razors and cartridges end up in landfills every year. This is an enormous amount of waste, and it does not take into account all the shaving foam packaging that is thrown away as well.

The packaging on most traditional Wet Shaving Products, however, is quite minimal, which helps reduce waste. Not only that, but these soaps and creams generally last longer than modern shaving products (like canned shaving foam). Often, wet shaving products can be purchased in refill form, which further reduces waste.

You will inevitably have to throw your DE blades away, too.  However, steel is recyclable. If you live in an area that offers this, you can put your blades in a blade bank and then bring them to be recycled; a blade bank is like a piggy bank, but for used blades (so it is normally a metal or thick plastic container for safety). Even if you don’t recycle them, the amount of space a DE blade takes up is minimal when compared to the size of a razor cartridge. So when the time comes to throw out that blade bank, you will be using much less of the landfill than when disposing of cartridges. It takes us over a year to fill up a whole blade bank. Talk about reduced waste!

Reuse with Wet Shaving Products

If this is still too wasteful for you, maybe consider straight razor shaving. A good straight razor can last a lifetime if well maintained, so it will not contribute to the landfills. Invest in a great strop or hone to keep it maintained. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you’ll look and feel like a badass when using a straight razor.

What others way is traditional wet shaving help you live a sustainable life? Let us know in the comments.
