A Tale for Ananta Chaturthi
A myth concerning the deity Anant is also included. Sushila’s Brahmin father remarried Sushila’s Hindu stepmother, Karkash, following the death of Sushila’s mother. Because Karkash was so unfriendly to Sushila, she left home soon after marriage. Her name’s husband’s name was Kaundinya.
On the way home, they came upon a river and stopped for a refreshing dip. When Sushila came across a group of women in prayer, she decided to join them and inquire about their devotion.
The women discussed the implications of Lord Anant’s pledge. Before beginning her new life with her spouse, Sushila decided it would be wise to pray to Lord Ananat and receive his blessings. She participated in all the rites, made the pledge, and even had the ceremonial thread fastened on her left hand.
Having always assumed that his success resulted from his ingenuity and perseverance, Kaundinya eventually began to doubt the goodness of Ananta. Because of their disagreement, Sushila and Kaundinya tore the Anant string from each other’s hands and hurled it into the fireplace.
After that, many bad things happened to them, and they were ultimately reduced to poverty. Kaundinya concluded, then, that the success and contentment of his people were due to the Ananta strings and ceremonies. After realizing that Ananta is the God Vishnu, Kundaniya performs extensive penance to gain forgiveness.
