YSL L’Homme vs. La Nuit (2023) Everything You Need to Know

YSL L’Homme vs. La Nuit.

Two completely different men’s fragrances.

This review will compare YSL L’Homme and YSL La Nuit de L’Homme EDT. I will detail their smell, performance, and anything else you need to know. In the end, I’ll compare and contrast and let you know which is best for you. You might even need both…

L’Homme EDT

The opening starts with equal parts bergamot, lemon, and ginger. The overarching idea of the first spray is invigorating and fresh. Other spice notes are lingering in the background, but nothing identifiable.

The citruses are tangy and refreshing and dominate the scent in the heart. The ginger, on the other hand, is never abrasive and instead has a unique twist that breaks up the monotony of the citruses.

The citruses and spices recede 10-15 minutes into the wear, and violet leaf takes over. It has a fresh and ozonic smell, unlike the gasoline accord found in Dior Fahrenheit. There is a floral nature, but it is mainly about emphasizing the freshness of the scent.

Into the dry down, the scent sweetens with a creamy and woody addition of tonka bean. The rest of the wear is woody, floral, and spicy. This is a simple scent but not linear. Only warm spices have lasted the entire wear.

L’Homme EDT is the perfect gentleman’s fragrance. It lasts six to seven hours on the skin. The projection is light to moderate but consistent. It pushes out one to two feet for most of the wear. It recedes but never becomes a skin scent. This is spring, summer, and fall wear for all occasions.

La Nuit de L’Homme EDT

The opening is a mix of sweetness and spicy freshness with woody undertones. Upon the first spray is a fleeting hit of bright bergamot. It doesn’t fade, but it does get shoved aside by cardamom. Which by all means is the star of the show. It has a warm and spicy nature yet is fresh when combined with bergamot.

After a few minutes, the bergamot is washed over by a more prominent lavender. It fuses with dominant cardamom, and the two run the show for most of the wear while resting on a fresh, woody cedar.

I mentioned that there is sweetness, and there is, but no note donates a heavy dose. It lingers in the background and accompanies the top notes. Never does it become sugary, but rather charmingly masculine.

Into the dry down, it is still all about dominant cardamom and lavender. The woodiness has gotten slightly stronger. I attribute this to the addition of vetiver. It is faint but strong enough to create a darker, woody accord.

The entire wear was simple. Dominant spicy cardamom smoothed out by lavender. Both are resting on a warm and woody base.

The performance is excellent for what La Nuit de L’Homme is meant to do. It lasts seven to eight hours on the skin, with intimate projection. This is exclusively fall and winter wear for special occasions. It is one of the best date night fragrances for men.

Comparison

Smell

There are minor similarities, but nothing that’d make you think these are similar fragrances. L’Homme EDT and La Nuit have fleeting hints of bergamot in the openings. As the wear continues, L’Homme will maintain a higher degree of freshness.

The second aspect of the openings is the spices. L’Homme EDT is focused on light and zingy ginger. It stays on the bright end of things. La Nuit de L’Homme is all about cardamom. This is darker, heavier, and warmer. If you look at the bottle colors, they are representative of the fragrance’s brightness and darkness.

The mid’s are both fresh. L’Homme has a brighter freshness from violet leaf. La Nuit has a darker freshness from aromatic lavender and retains a more prominent spice note.

L’Homme EDT finishes with a much more prominent woody base. La Nuit is all about cardamom spice from the beginning to the end. Neither are complex fragrances, but La Nuit de L’Homme is much more linear and darker.

Performance

The longevity of both is so similar that it’s negligible. The biggest differences come from their projection. L’Homme EDT is a gentlemanly projector. It is noticeable for the entire wear but never overwhelming. This is great because it makes it exceptionally versatile. Not that you should, but you overspray L’Homme EDT and not offend anyone.

La Nuit de L’Homme EDT is an intimate projector and one of the main aspects that makes it great for date night. It will be discovered and not announced. You can douse yourself in La Nuit de L’Homme; it doesn’t project much better.

Versatility

L’Homme EDT is a more versatile fragrance for both seasons and occasions. La Nuit de L’Homme is a fragrance you’d never wear in the heat. The projection is weak, but the cardamom becomes too intense for you. Locked in a confined space, you’ll most likely get nauseous.

The occasions are a bit more lenient. La Nuit de L’Homme is one of the best date night fragrances; it is wearable as long as it’s cold out.

Final Words

Is YSL L’Homme or La Nuit de L’Homme better? Neither. These are separate beasts. This may not be the answer you wanted, but you should decide what you will wear it more for, rather than which is better.

If you’re looking for a cold-weather or seductive fragrance, La Nuit de L’Homme EDT is your best choice. However, if you want a more wearable scent with the same quality, L’Homme EDT will be your better choice.

After you try YSL L’Homme EDT and/or La Nuit de L’Homme EDT, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
