Review: Fou D’Absinthe L’Artisan Parfumeur – Do You Need It?

Fou D’Absinthe.

A comforting pine fragrance.

Fou D’Absinthe L’Artisan Parfumeur was released in 2006. It is based on wood, spices, and aromatics. It lasts four to five hours on the skin with intimate projection. In this review, I will describe its smell and performance and if it’s worth it.

What Does Fou D’Absinthe Smell Like?

A fragrance inspired by the famous drink of Bohemia Paris. I’ve never tried this drink, but I smell an alcoholic nature from the start. You can think of the opening as a refreshing drink on a hot day. It opens with a calm and bright alcoholic aroma. In the background, bitter green undertones support the prominent top notes.

A variety of notes create the mid. The one that sticks out most is the anise note, with its slightly sweet, spicy, and green accents. This blends perfectly with the numerous other herbal notes in the heart.

The spices linger in the background at this point, and the opening has lost its cool and refreshing nature. The briskness of the alcoholic notes is replaced by evergreen notes. The rest of the wear continually gets more intense.

The easiest way to describe the dry down is warm woods. There’s a pop of pine needles. That perfectly blends and contrasts with the patchouli, amber, and vetiver depth.

Fou D’Absinthe L’Artisan Parfumeur notes:

TOP NOTES

  • Wormwood
  • Angelica
  • Black Currant

MID NOTES

  • Star Anise
  • Nutmeg
  • Cloves
  • Ginger
  • Pepper
  • Patchouli

BASE NOTES

  • Pine Tree Needles
  • Balsam Fir
  • Incense

Performance

Fou D’Absinthe lasts four to five hours on the skin. This is the biggest downfall of the fragrance. The projection is light. The first one to two hours, it pushes out two feet. After this, it quickly recedes to a skin scent. The sillage is no different. It doesn’t hang in the air well as you move around. This performance is with five sprays.

This is all-season wear. This is one aspect where the subtle projection helps out. I particularly enjoy this in the summer because of the refreshing alcoholic nature in the opening from black currant. The same can be said for occasions. It’s subtle enough for the office and unique enough to stand out on formal occasions and dates.

The mass appeal and likability are excellent. This is a comforting and masculine fragrance. It’s never in your face nor shouts for attention. It allows others in your vicinity to experience your aroma without being consumed by it. This is an excellent choice if you want a unique compliment-getter.

Lastly, the uniqueness is excellent. This is more than just a woody scent. The black currant in the opening with the crisp star anise note in the base set Fou D’Absinthe apart.

Besuited Aroma gives Fou D’Absinthe L’Artisan Parfumeur a 7.7 out of 10 rating.

Final Words

Is Fou D’Absinthe L’Artisan Parfumeur worth it? It’s worth a sample or decant. This fragrance has a lot going for it. It’s unique and authentic, with a comforting and subtle aroma. Like Diptyque Tam Dao EDP, it’s a pleasant fragrance to lounge around in.

Yet, the performance struggles, and it’s an expensive fragrance. If you’re looking for authentic pine colognes, some better choices are at or below the same price.

In short, I recommend you fall in love with this fragrance before you purchase it.

If you try Fou D’Absinthe L’Artisan Parfumeur, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
