The Art of Change’ takes listeners on a journey through time and place, using recorded voice memos as a ‘feedback loop’ where DROELOE’s present self engages in conversations with his past and future selves. Snippets are taken from audio cassettes and journal entries to help him grow each day, fostering feelings of resolution (‘Downside Up ft. Transviolet’), motivation (‘Decision’), gratitude (‘Landscape’) and fearlessness (‘Feeble Games’) throughout his life. Each of these moments is represented in visual form by acclaimed artist Funi who has created fifteen unique 360-degree animated ‘worlds’ to accompany each track on the album (see here) – turning each moment into a place that can be revisited by Rooijers and by his fans.

The Art of Change bears all the hallmarks of DROELOE projects fans know and love: creatively exploring a myriad of subgenres within the indie and electronic realms, while constantly searching for new vantage points, seeking out the boundaries on the peripheries of the worlds around us, and pushing our experience as far as we can beyond. Songs like ‘Landscape’ showcase DROELOE’s ability to do just that, seamlessly blending elements of drum & bass with a thumping indie-pop feel. Tracks such as ‘Foolish Fish,’ ‘Strange Wave,’ and ‘Lionheart‘ each display DROELOE’s unpredictable sonic tapestry of pop, future bass, and breakbeat arrangements, paired with his own soul-stirring vocals, that leave the listener awestruck by the song’s end.

In the run-up to release listeners were invited to follow DROELOE on this journey in a series of fan activations, recording their own messages to themselves by voice memo, tape cassette, or in written form in one of the physical journals DROELOE launched as merch. Fans wrote a message to themselves via DROELOE’s website which will be sent back to them in a year, and had access to a series of written essays by Rooijers which formed the philosophical bedrock behind the creation of ‘The Art of Change.’ This multi-dimensional approach to the album riddled with hidden ‘easter eggs,’ codes and games was a sensory delight for audiences that, in trademark DROELOE style, took us far beyond the possibilities of a conventional listening experience.

The ever-shifting of perspective and reflection central to ‘A Matter of Perspective’ remains a core theme in ‘The Art of Change,’ but now Rooijer is unmistakably stepping forward, putting himself in the driving seat, evolving from observer to protagonist. ‘The Art of Change’ will be one of the most exciting and adventurous albums of the year.
