In today’s world, Cinema is the number one factor impacting the fashion industry. Trends set by the various movies, have youngsters wanting to try out their favorite star’s looks from the latest hit movie. Costumes worn by the stars in popular movies have become the latest rage in Indian fashion. Added to this, designers of these outfits, wield considerable following on the Indian fashion runways. Be it Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Neeta Lulla, or Manish Malhotra, all the designs from their movies are in major demand. Let us look at how Bollywood Cinema has been a major trendsetter and inspiration for the fashion industry.

This traces back to Mughal-E-Azam, which set in vogue the Anarkali Kurta, which remains extremely popular to this day. Other movies that set the trend include Sridevi’s iconic blue chiffon sari in Mr India, Madhuri Dixit’s backless blouse and Salman Khan’s three-piece suit in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun — with Madhuri’s white and green sharara becoming the hottest colour combination of the season and selling off the top of shelves. Aishwarya Rai’s regal look in Jodhaa Akbar spawned simplistic yet regal looks for the ensuing wedding seasons. Deepika Padukone’s Mastaani Kurta with Palazzo swept the nation since its debut in Baji Rao Mastani and still holds the nation in its grip. Deepika’s other release — Goliyon ki Raasleela — Ram Leela, set a craze for beaded lehengas and rich fabrics and contrasts — Gujarati fashion, as did her film Padmaavat, which showcased Rajasthani dresses and jewelry. In Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Deepika Padukone donned a simple yet elegant look for teens, that remains their go-to style even today.

With Indian actresses now making Cannes appearances, they have become even bigger fashion icons. From Aishwarya Rai to Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, and Kangana Ranaut, these ladies are now trendsetters. Deepika Padukone is known for her classy style. Kangana Ranaut is one of the most startling yet elegant fashion front runners. She has made permed hair popular and her edgy sartorial style includes many retro and vintage elements, along with her soft, feminine looks in the movie Queen. Sonam Kapoor is another leading fashionista, who loves feminine silhouettes and pretty pastels while endorsing modern silhouettes and more recently street fashion.

In trends, Neon fashion has been emphasized by actors such as Deepika Padukone, Janaki Kapoor and Ananya Pandey. Tie and Dye fabrics have seen a revival of the hippie spirit, and are being sported by the likes of Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt and Ananya Pandey. Sequined Saris are one of the current fashion hits, outfitting Tara Sutaria, Kriti Sanon and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Statement Sleeves are being showcased by Sonam Kapoor Ahuja in a black dress and Anushka Sharma in a simple, pearly white coloured midi dress. Power Dressing is represented by Alia Bhatt in a red and white graphic printed pantsuit, during Gully Boy promotions. Another famed power dressing statement came from Anushka Sharma in a golden and black checkered pantsuit. The wedding trousseaus of Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma also set the nation ablaze during the wedding season, with brides wanting the mehndi look of Deepika or the baby pink rose themed wedding dress of Anushka.
