#1. Coach

Coach

Overview: Coach is a mid-luxury American design brand specialized in leather goods like handbags, accessories, and ready-to-wear garments.

Price Range: $$$

Origin and Concept: Coach was founded in 1941 as a family workshop in Manhattan, focused on making leather wallets and billfolds in an artisanal way. In 1946, Miles Cahn and his wife (who owned a leather handbag manufacturing business) joined the company and with their knowledge took it to the next level.

By 1950, Cahn had taken over the company. He revolutionized the leather industry by creating processed leather that was stronger, softer, and more flexible. The process also lends it a darker, richer tan color. By his wife’s suggestion, they expanded into women’s handbags and bought the company. In 1965, Richard Rose joined the company and put Coach in stores across the United States.

Around 1981, Coach was sold to Sara Lee and under the Hanes group, it got restructured and expanded. Coach’s products are known for being classical, functional, lightweight, and stylish. They have extended these characteristics to their other items as well.

Conceptually, the brand combines an original American attitude with great design, as well as valuing their heritage of fine leather goods and custom canvases that are used to create top-quality products that are durable and appreciated by their customers.
