#1. Burberry

Overview: Burberry is a British fashion brand that specializes in heritage luxury apparel. It is headquartered in London, England, and it is most famous for having invented the gabardine fabric and iconic trench coats.

Price Range: $$$$

Origin and Concept: The brand was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, who was a draper’s apprentice, and it originally produced outdoor apparel.

After developing the gabardine, which is a hardwearing, water-resistant, and breathable fabric in which the yarn is waterproofed before weaving, they went on to design clothing for expeditioners like Roald Amundsen and George Mallory.

The gabardine was adapted into the trench coat during World War I, and it become popular with civilians quickly afterward. Its symbolic Burberry check is easily the next most iconic item after the trench coat. The brand expanded during the 70s, 80s, and 90s, taking over the world by storm.

Despite this, since it uses few eco-friendly materials, Burberry’s rating is only ‘good’ when it comes to Ethical Practices. They had also set a deadline to eliminate hazardous chemicals by 2020 that may or may not have been accomplished.

By 1950, Miles and Lillian Cahn (who owned a leather handbag manufacturing business) had taken over the company. They developed a new way to process leather to mimic the evolution of the leather used for baseball gloves.

This new leather was more flexible, softer, and a rich tan color. It was instantly a hit.

After Bonnie Cashin redesigned the creative style of the brand in 1961, it instituted the use of side pockets, coin purses, and bright colors in its handbags. They also added shoes, pens, key fobs, and eyewear. Soon after apparel followed suit.

Recommended Product(s): Horse and Carriage Cardigan & Relaxed Summer Blazer

Celebs who are fans: Jennifer Lopez, Kaia Gerber, Paloma Elsesser, Kim Gordon, Kylie Jenner, Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker, the Olsen twins, and more.
