Have you seen the Ghanaian smock? Over the years, we have seen celebrities rock the outfit in different ways. What do we know about this outfit? We can start by showing you some of these outfits.

The Ghanaian smock is also known as Bun-nw or Bana by Mamprusis, fugu or a batakari in the northern region, dansika in Frafra, and futik in Kusaal. It is plaid and tunic-like shirt, which is similar to the dashiki. The smock originated from northern Ghana. It was formerly worn by kings in the three northern regions. Presently, the attire is popular and widely worn by citizens and non-citizens across Ghana. 

Strip clothes are used to make the smock. They are hand-loomed strips that are produced by the combination of the cotton loom which may be either be dyed or not. The smock gets its plaid appearance when the strip cloths are sewn together using a machine or by hand. Embroideries may be found in the neckline of some Smocks. Chiefs in Ghana wear the smock with a red fez hat but normally, a Kufi cap is worn to complement the attire.

Although the fugu and the batakari are quite similar, t. are some clear distinctions between the two. The batakari, for one, is made up of a flowing gown and trousers of several fabrics while the Fugu is a hand weaved, plaid, and tunic shirt made of cotton. 

The dashiki is a style from the formal smock pattern. However, it is sewn as almost sleeveless attire with a looser fitting. The dashiki is mostly worn during the hot and dry season due to its nature and design.

Royal smocks are produced specially for chiefs to make a distinction between an average citizen and royalty. The royal smocks come with knee-length leather boots, a cap, and trousers. Types of Smock

 Generally, t. are three traditional smock designs, which have been identified with the country’s Northern, Upper East, and Upper West regions.

1.) Cool coloured smocks:

The Upper West Region of Ghana produces this smock. The smock comes in a combination of various shades of colours like blue, green, or the two colors with subtle colors such as yellow and white. 

2.) Warm colored smocks:

These are produced by the Upper East region and possess various shades of red or orange which dominate other colours of the fabric. 

3.) Heavy-duty smocks:

The Northern Region produces this type. They are made of heavy fabric and are generally large.
