The administration of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has responded to rape allegations leveled against one of its lecturers, Dr Steve Ekundayo.

The university referred charges of alleged rape and wrongful detention against Dr Steve Ekundayo to the police for investigation, according to a statement published by its spokesperson, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, on Thursday in Benin.

The decision was made due to the seriousness of the charges and the legal concerns that arose.

Ekundayo, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Literature, allegedly raped a 400-level Student in his office on Tuesday and then locked her up for several hours, according to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN).

The student was reportedly rescued by the police when the victim sent a panic text message to a friend.

Ehanire revealed that the lecturer had been issued an inquiry and placed on interdiction by the administration until the conclusion of police investigations.

“A security report of a preliminary investigation into the alleged rape and incarceration of a 400-level female student of the Department of English and Literature, University of Benin, by a lecturer in the department has been presented to the university’s management,” the statement stated in part.

“The situation has been reported to the police for additional investigation due to the seriousness of the allegations and the legal problems involved.”

“Management, on the other hand, is fully aware of its responsibility to ensure proper conduct by both university staff and students.

“These are in accordance with internal methods outlined in the University’s Regulations Governing the Service of Senior Staff, 2017.”

Staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders were assured that justice would be served as the inquiry into the situation proceeded to its logical conclusion.
