Fall 2019 Couture: Valentino

Pierpaolo Piccioli, the current creative director of Valentino, is these days, the man to look out for in the fashion world. One of the forefront people to try and bring about a change in the fashion industry to embrace inclusivity and individualism, his Fall’19 Collection did not disappoint at all. A-stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Celine Dion, Nomi Campbell along with Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti were in attendance to witness the spectacular collection.

“The only way to make couture alive today is to embrace different women’s identities and cultures. It’s about the idea of individualism. It’s important today to dream of a world without boundaries, where everyone can live their own routes, everywhere. It’s just a dream, of course,” Piccioli said.

The designer chose a floral theme in a colorful palette to showcase through his Couture pieces.  The Valentino Collection was also inspired by Avedon portraits, Guy Bourdin advertising shots, canvases by the Italian Renaissance mannerist Rosso Fiorentino, and paintings of Diana Vreeland’s documentary, The Eye Has To Travel. The collection had a total of 71 pieces with a focus both on day wear and evening wear.

The Couture Collection was worn by women of different races and age as they gracefully walked the runway to showcase them. For day wear  Piccioli showcased tops and culottes, waist length trousers with bustiers, colorful coats and draped dresses. The evening wear consisted of skirts, dresses, and ball gowns. The detailed handwork took hundreds of hours to complete.  “It’s not engineered by computer. You can feel the humanity in it,” Piccioli told Vogue.

In what was the most touching and teary-eyed moment of the entire show, Pierpaolo Piccioli brought the whole team behind the collection out on the runway to walk with him. The whole Atelier staff walked down the runway as a gesture by Piccioli to celebrate individualism and he thanked the team for making the collection possible. At the end of the runway, the whole team stopped to blow kisses and say thank you to Valentino, the man who created this fashion house.
