MAKEUP | Youthforia BYO Blush Color Changing Blush Oil

Purchased by me

When it comes to getting Youthforia on the map, THIS right here is the product that launched them into the social media stratosphere of stardom! The BYO Blush is “the world’s first colour-changing blush oil” that like all other Youthforia products, is makeup you can sleep in with 98% of the ingredients in this blush being bio-based and coming from renewable sources. Apparently having this blush on your skin even helps with fine lines and when looking at the ingredients list, most of the ingredients are plant oils like jojoba, sunflower and olive fruit which are oftentimes what I use in my night time skincare routine so it makes sense!

Firstly, packaging is happy, bright and feels fairly luxurious for a “young” brand and at $50 USD, this is easily a luxury price! Instantly, the transparent, light green hue had my attention and the inspiration behind this product was that Fiona wanted to create a universally flattering blush that also did not ruin your skin if you left it on overnight, but made it better.
After having a chat with a blogger friend and doing some research on my own, the idea that this blush “reacts to your skin’s natural pH to instantly give you the perfect shade of natural flush” is kind of true. We would like to think there is something magical in here that constantly adapts to melanin, but in reality the magic ingredient in all “pH changing” products is the ingredient Red 27 which is clear in a waterless base until it reacts with moisture aka skin/lips and turns a bright pinkish red. What makes the actual colour of the blush look unique is actual skin tone, but the shade itself always turns the same pinkish red. I mean, that’s ok as I always wondered why even the “mood changing” drugstore lipsticks I got as a kid turned pinkish on me.
This blush is applied directly to the face with the Doe Foot Applicator in 2-3 dabs per side with a little going a long way! Since the doe foot applicator is flat and holds product nicely on each side, I am able to easily do both cheeks without having to dip back into the tube. At first I did not think this oil (that really doesn’t feel like an oil at all as it just sort of becomes part of your skin) would blend well with a brush, but it does! In fact, the colour diffuses quite nicely with a brush and the formula plays nicely with both powder and liquid foundation/products underneath! To keep the doe foot applicator clean, after I apply the blush to my face, I wipe off the applicator on my hand before inserting it back into the tube.
You can also use this oil on the lips for a subtle pink shade, but I would apply the product to the back of the hand (or use a separate clean applicator) and then use your finger to apply instead of using the doe foot directly just to make sure the product doesn’t get cloudy.

You can also mix this blush with foundation to make a “tonal blush” which is something I have never tried before so I’ll let you know how it goes!

I also have a live application of the Byo Blush on my Instagram if you would like to see how easily it applies and blends! In terms of lasting power, with setting spray I am good to go all day 10-12 hours with a little bit of break down by the end of the day, but it’s really not bad at all (see photo below)!
Final verdict: I have not slept in this because I just can’t wrap my head around going to bed with colour on my face, but when I wear it during the day, I sometimes touch my face as if I am makeup-free, but then realize I have this blush on so it truly does feel incredibly lightweight and looks, on me, like just a touch more than. natural flush. While I like this product and how cool-looking it is, I still find that there are days when I like a powder blush in a different shade so with my next Youthoria order, I might try a few shades of their tinted blush oil. I think what makes this blush a bit different than other liquid blush tints I have tried is that the texture is just a tad thicker which allows for a more blendable blush look. I think having the presence of oils makes a difference and it doesn’t tint the skin like a classic cheek stain. Overall, I am quite pleased with BYO Blush and I do feel like I have a bit more fun with my makeup routine in the mornings whenever I use it!
