Add These Styles To Your Coat Closet This Fall

From layering with Spring jackets to Fall Coat checks, outerwear has become an essential part of making a worthy style statement among the millennials and it’s time you embraced the trend. Besides, jackets, blazers, and coats give you so much more to work with in terms of colours, fabrics, prints, hardware and fits.

So if you’re wondering the piece you shouldn’t leave home without this season, it’s the very fashionable and yet functional coat. What’s more, you’ve got five key styles to choose from that seem to have gotten the nod from the well-heeled lot. These coat styles have been spotted on the ramp at Fashion Weeks and legit need to be in your closet for FW2017!

1. The Trench

Known for their British heritage weaves, it was brand Burberry that elevated the trench coat to iconic status by making it the centrepiece of many of their collections. Well, trench coats continue to make it to head ramp at Burberry shows this Fall, as well as MaxMara where they did the coats in a double breast version. Over at Moschino, it was all about going buttonless and in favour of a belted coat instead.

A perfect transition piece, the trench coat looks fabulous thrown over an LBD with boots for a smart occasion, or combined with a white tee and jeans for everyday glam.

2. The Long-Line Blazer

Ann Demeulemeester Black Long Howard Blazer Coat, £1,245

With androgyny being a key trend this Autumn-Winter season, it’s time to welcome a tailored blazer into your wardrobe—but, not just any will do. This blazer needs to be long-lined, which means it needs to be at least tunic length. Some designers even showcased below-the-knee versions, which look fierce when combined with skinny jeans and pointed pumps.

You can go with classic neutrals à la Victoria Beckham, opt for powdery pastel shades like those over at Joseph, or vibe with Autumnal looks (long-line blazers in mustard yellow, midnight blue, and burnt red) that were spotted at Malan Breton.

3. The Shearling Jacket

Coach Shearling Varsity Jacket With Patches, £1,595

Another key fashion trend this year is folklore, which takes inspiration from the hippie vibes of the ’60s and ’70s and gives them a contemporary twist. Think embroidered floral flocks, bell sleeves and, of course, shearling jackets.

Coming in hot in an array of different designs and colours, shearling jackets are just as cosy as they are cute. Plus, it’s up to you exactly how much shearling you want to embrace. You can follow the lead of designers such as Prada and Etro and buy a jacket that just features shearling on the collar. Or, you can vamp up the ante and replicate Coach, where you buy a jacket that has shearling all over.

4. The Puffer

Dolce & Gabbana Oversized Leopard Nylon Puffer Jacket, £2,550

A popular favourite season upon season, particularly with the European crowd, the puffer jacket makes its return for Fall 2017. This time forget the understated—it’s all about bigger is better (think Rihanna).

The puffer jacket is still available in the traditional coat hues of black, beige, navy and khaki from a number of retailers. However, why not go for something a little out of your comfort zone? At Jil Sander, it was all about showcasing the puffer in bold and bright hues. On the flipside, folks over at Dolce & Gabbana went for outlandish prints with even some leopard spots thrown into the mix.

Either way, channel your inner exhibitionist with a fashion-forward puffer jacket that doesn’t shy away from attention.

5. The Sheer Raincoat

Not one for the faint-hearted, this trend is all about making raincoats sexy. Even though they don’t necessarily look practical, they are—you can certainly wear transparent or semi-sheer raincoats on gloomy days so as to not waste the cute outfit you’ve got on underneath. Take inspiration from Alberta Ferretti and Calvin Klein, whose models stomped down the AW17 catwalks wearing sheer raincoats with attitude.
