Florals? Tips On How To Not Look Like A Cliché

Summer is officially in full swing, which means that most of the store aisles are flooded with Floral prints and pop colours.

Yawn!

But, just because it reminds you of a fashion cliché doesn’t mean it doesn’t have the potential to look great. They’re clichés for a reason. It’s because they work. So, while we’re totally on board with Miranda Priestly’s fashion sense in Devil Wears Prada, florals for spring-summer can actually be ground-breaking if you can extend your imagination and think out of the box.

Designers Reinvent Florals In 2017

Now, you needn’t pull out all your goth accessories to ramp up the flower power. Designer Jasper Conran would rather you embrace nature with complementary motifs that go beyond roses and leaves. Extend your canvas to butterflies, birds, lady bugs… the whole garden, as he did with the dresses in his collection.

On the other hand, Altuzarra made for an interesting case of mix-and-match with his black and white floral skirt, which he teamed with a blue top and tights that featured cherry prints. Wild, right? Well, it looked amazing!

Other designers also gave us unique takes on florals. Anna Sui added some edginess to her floral ensembles with leather jackets and belts, and Salvatore Ferragamo complemented his feminine creations with fierce, black ankle boots.

The fashion elite resonated the same sentiment. Let florals signify more than femininity. Let them be empowering, whether it’s with animal motifs, combat boots, chaos in prints, or even some interesting hardware on your accessories. It’s all very 2017.

And with that, we decided to rustle up three outfit ideas that fit the brief. We’re sure Miranda Priestly would approve.

Not So Floral Palette

Phase Eight Albany Print Blouse, £17.50; Glamorous Ripped Mom Jeans, £20;
New Look Black Strappy Gladiator Heels, £29.99

You needn’t look like you jumped out of Cath Kidston’s lookbooks. While many love her busy prints in pop colours, for an unconventional take just opt for a base shade that’s not so saccharine—perhaps muted in neutrals even. The Phase Eight Albany Print Blouse nails the brief and is so easy-breezy in its baggy cut that it’s perfect for summer.

Florals With An Edge

Topshop Floral Embroidered Mini Skirt, £36; Milly Off-Shoulder Top, £106;
Acne Studios Ava Suede Ankle Boots, £330; Boohoo Katie Bond Fedora Hat, £10

We’re going to show you how to make florals, yes, even classic embroidered ones very nouveau. One doesn’t need a leather jacket to add some edge. Simply opting for a dark background colour to act as a canvas for your florals can really change the way they look. That’s why we love this Topshop mini. It’s not conventionally feminine despite the flower motifs, and the fitted silhouette versus a flare one helps it not be a cliché too.

You can double down on your look with some boots and a striped top that no one saw coming. Now, we would totally wear the Fedora, just as a chic way to keep the sun out of our eye, but this one’s a take-it-or-leave-it accessory based on your personal style.

Mixing & Matching Your Florals

Darling Blazer, £67; Boss Orange Saledy Faux Leather Leggings, £72;
New Look Gold Leather High Ankle Ghillie Heels, £17;
Zac Posen Earthette Embellished Wristlet Clutch, £297

Denim on denim might still give you nightmares (thanks to Britney and Justin), but florals on florals are in fact a very workable trend if you’re veering away from clichés.

First non-cliché: A floral Bomber Jacket, blazer, or oversized coat.

Second non-cliché: A floral clutch bag in ivory white.

Pair these with a basic tank top, leggings, and glamorous gladiators, and you’re good to go.
