What Do You Think Of Nike’s First-Ever Plus Size Collection?

With the internet and its many facets, one thing that has come out of our constant sharing, commenting and liking is, well, awareness. This century has brought with it a change that is no longer personal. It’s about the society at large and many brands have taken it upon themselves to ensure that they’re part of social change. One such brand that has always inspired us is Nike, which has now released a line of plus size workout wear that actually fits plus size women in a flattering way. No, really, their sports bras go up to 38E and come fitted with detachable clasps and straps that can be crisscrossed or straightened for comfort and support. Unsurprisingly, Nike’s ‘Size Doesn’t Matter’ collection has us rooting for the brand, once again!

Ironically, Brands Don’t Make Workout Clothes For The Plus Size

This behemoth task of finding the right plus size clothing escalates even further when it comes to activewear. Unlike regular clothing, activewear has to go a step ahead and look attractive while also providing structure, support, comfort, and ease of movement.

Brands tend to overlook simple things like:

  • Sports bras should have wider straps/band to conceal and contain a heavy back/bigger breasts;
  • Also, wide but comfortable waistbands that belt the tummy area on a pair of yoga pants are very slimming and make a plus size person feel more confident and in shape.
  • And, please stop making plus size clothes in black or white only. Size 18 women love pink joggers as much as Size 6 women.

Finally, The Collection

Nike had announced last year in July that they would launch a new plus-size line, which came to fruition last week. To celebrate the diversity of women’s bodies, the sportswear brand has signed up bloggers Grace Victory and Danielle Vanier, models Paloma Elsesser, and Naomi Shimada, and US athlete Amanda Bingson to star in their latest campaign. The need for a full-fledged line came with the sports bra. The brand initially only focused on sports bras for bigger busts but then…

Ladies, @nikewomen now have a plus size range! I’m beyond proud to have been chosen to collaborate with such a huge brand. …they whipped up a 200-piece strong collection of workout clothes designed for the gym, yoga, sports, and alternative fitness activities.

  • The separates include tops, tights, hoodies, shorts, pants, tees and sports bras from sizes 1X to 3X.
  • The use of mesh panels for design and moisture-wicking fabric to keep the sweat in check are expected additions from the sportswear brand.
  • Graphics and piping details create contrasts to black and white basics, and you do see a pink and an orange top in the line-up, but it’s just those two. We wish Nike had been more experimental with the colour palette.
  • The clothes are definitely designed for bigger women because thoughtful insertions like wider straps, bigger waistbands have been included.
  • The fits appear relaxed but not boxy, which is a great plus.
  • These garments will retail anywhere between $20-$125 and no, the line does not feature menswear.

Strong is the new keyword for us; size doesn’t matter”

Helen Boucher, vice president of women’s training apparel at Nike said that instead of designing larger garments, they have kept in mind the variances in plus size bodies and understood how the right fit and colour can accentuate and flatter these bodies. Hmm… maybe that’s why they went with a dominantly dark colour palette.

Plus Size Workout Wear From Other Brands

Just when you thought Nike is awesome-sauce (and hey, they are), you shouldn’t forget that there have been many brands who have dedicated themselves to push the envelope and deliver quality apparel to the plus size audience.

  • Old Navy has an extensive range of activewear that goes all the way to 4X. Known for their affordable clothing, Old Navy provides the sizes at the right prices. Although they may not have high-quality fitness-verified garments that specialised sportswear brands such as Nike or Adidas would, they’re still comfortable and do the job.
  • Fullbeauty SPORT is the activewear section of the exclusively plus size brand that offers clothes from size 12-44. They have an affordable range of sportswear which is extremely flattering and have a gamut of colours (which many plus size women are starved for) in their collection.
  • Athleta is a sportswear giant that houses a wide range of brands. They have a massive variety of plus size activewear clothing. Most brands under Athleta have a mid-range price point.
