Fad Diets don't work!

Many times in order to Lose Weight and look better, we turn to alternatives that even though are fast, they endanger our health and can potentially make us become more obese in the future, one of these alternatives is the so called "fad diets", "miracle diets" or whatever you call them.

But fad diets will make me lose weight really fast won't they? The short answer is yes, however as we have seen in previous posts, it's not the same to lose weight and to lose fat, miracle diets are characterized primarily by being extremely low-calorie, so fat loss is minimized and instead our body begins to use muscle for energy. This effect is increased when the diet in addition to being hypocaloric, is also not meeting our protein needs.

Losing muscle has a terrible effect on our metabolism, since it is a metabolically active tissue and a loss of it produces a decrease in basal metabolic rate, meaning that the less muscle you have, the less you need to eat to gain weight, this is the main reason why fad diets will make you gain even more weight than when you started.

Another major reason why these diets do not work is because they don't promote a change in eating habits in people who carry them out, they are only short-term strategies that seek a quick fix to the bad habits we have had for years, but when we stop following those diets and return to our real way of eating, we shouldn't be surprised that the weight we lost in 3 very hard days is back in a week and also brought some few grams more with it to the party. Don't let this happen to you!

A diet plan should always be individualized, as no person and no organism is the same, people who design these diets don't take into account this aspect and may suggest their diet for a 300 pound man or a 110 pound lady, I would really suffer if I had to lose weight that way if I was the first case!

If your goal is to lose weight be sure not to fall into the trap of following a miracle diet, because ultimately you'll wreck your weight, body fat percentage and your self esteem. Remember that changing eating habits in the long run is what is going to make you reach your goal.
