Let the Summer Begin!

My kids officially finished School yesterday, which means it’s finally summertime! Although the warm weather has made it feel like summer for a little while, my busy work schedule combined with the rhythm of the school year meant it hadn’t officially started until today. I don’t exactly have a training recap this week, this is more of a weekend/life/training/catchup recap.

The past few weeks have been flooded with end of year performances and final soccer games for the kids, then work and an industry Conference that I attended. Working behind the scenes in the performing arts for my whole career means that I was incredibly proud of my fourth grader in her school opera performance, working hard as an electrician/stage manager/techie. She got a taste of what it takes to put on a production and she loved it!

This past weekend I did two races and both went pretty well!

I ran the Run for Roses 5K with the LUNA Chix DC Run team, and it was fantastic! It’s a race organized by my awesome running club, the Montgomery County Road Runners. It was mostly/partially on trails, which surprised me – I just didn’t pick up on that in the course description:

“The certified 5K course includes a short stretch on local roads, then continues on several scenic paved and soft dirt loop courses winding through the woods and along beautiful Pine Lake within Wheaton Regional Park.”

We all loved it and had a great time handing out LUNA bars and meeting new people.

I managed to place for a 2nd place Age Group prize! I think I was third fastest runner in the Women 40-44 age group, but the first person got an “overall masters” award so that bumped me up to second place. Hey, I’ll take it! My time was 26:20, which comes out to 8:29/mile. I wasn’t going to “race it” because I had a triathlon the next day, and I probably pushed it more than I meant to but it felt great. It was a women-only race and a really positive and supportive atmosphere.

I managed to get in some quality family time as well this weekend, with some one-on-one with my daughter as well as my youngest son:

At an outdoor food and music festival with my four year old.

Father’s Day morning I did the Rev3 Montclair Triathlon, a Sprint distance tri in Virginia. It was a great race – I’m almost done with my recap but in short, I finished in 1:28 with a pretty crappy swim (leaky goggles so I was treading water several times to fix them), pretty decent bike, and a great run.

My dad had been biking solo through France for a few weeks (at age 70 – can we say inspirational!?!?) and was back just in time for Father’s Day so we had a BBQ at his house.

Then I celebrated the last day of school with my kids at a neighbor friend’s house for Smores, catching fireflies, and wine (for the grownups). It was really relaxing and lovely to see the kids telling spooky stories in a backyard tent by flashlight. I love summer fun!

So now after one rest day I’m back to business trying to juggle at-home workouts with the swimming, biking, running that’s on my triathlon training plan. The challenge is childcare for out of the house workouts, so I’m working on finalizing these plans to address the summer workouts I need to get done.

I have some fun trips planned for the summer – a girls’ weekend, a race weekend, a beach week with the kids – amazing summer fun is anticipated! It’s going to get intense workout-wise this summer as I train for two fall half Ironmans, but I feel ready for it!

Have you ever done two races in one weekend?
