Don’t Cry, it’s Over!!

Today I would like to rewrite the famous number: Don’t worry be happy! Don’t Cry, always Smile!!

Is crying any solution for the emotions or situations you are going through? Not really, still, we cry. Holding tears is not everybody’s cup of tea. It needs a lot of courage to manage or hold your tears in any unpleasant or disturbing situation.

What is crying? Why do all living beings cry? Crying is a natural rather automated response to emotions such as sadness, joy, or frustration is normal and has several health benefits. However, sometimes frequent crying can be a sign of depression.

People may be depressed if they cry: which happens very frequently. Indeed, crying helps to relieve your grief but when the situation cannot be turned around, is there any point in crying? Hence, elders suggest that there is no point in crying, it does not yield anything besides making you and your loved ones sad.

There is a quote that is usually attributed to Dr. Seuss,

“Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened.”

 However, there is an older translation from the German Poet Ludwig Jakubowski which translates to:

“Do not cry because they are past; smile because they once were!” This inspiring quote is a reference to the emotions we all feel throughout life.

When we cry, it is because we are profoundly sad (or angry sometimes).

The point behind this quote is:

Without getting to experience something that moved you or deeply affected who you are, there would be nothing to cry over when it ended.

Feeling deep feelings, including sadness, is good for us because:

  • It allows us to be real.
  • It teaches us lessons.
  • It helps us embrace change.
  • Its pain and challenges push us to grow.

However, to be deeply sad about something also means, at one time, we had to feel other deep emotions about it, like love, joy, or happiness.

What does do not cry because it is over smile mean?

This quote from Dr. Seuss means to not cry over something that occurred and cannot be changed but to be happy about it.

Crying in response to emotions such as sadness, joy, or frustration is normal and has several health benefits. However, sometimes frequent crying can be a sign of depression. People may be depressed if they cry: which happens very frequently.

Besides, there are many adverse effects of crying like it
can lead to fits or can cause acute shortness of breath. For those with severe heart conditions, there can be cardiac pain. Crying can take a toll on your body if you have certain medical conditions. For most people crying does better for their body than harm.

Medically, it is termed as healthy to try not to cry.

It is not good for people to bottle up their emotions inside. Keeping strong feelings inside without sharing them with anyone can harm your health. Although crying is not the only way to express your emotions, it is a healthy and normal way to do so.

As goes the saying: Don’t cry over the split milk. What is gone is gone…It will not return. That is why it is said: Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. We perceive that change is always unsettling as we must move out of our comfort zone. After cosily staying in similar surroundings, it becomes difficult to move out, and adjusting to the change is challenging. You should accept that change positively rather than mourn over what has been left behind.

As a child, I studied in a School in Bhopal and it was one of the most amazing schools. In those times, I had cut through the merit list to grab a seat there. My parents received so many congratulatory messages that their daughter made it to that school. I was very happy there, the education was good, the atmosphere was good, the teachers loved me and I participated in many school activities. This way I was quite popular in school. I loved being there. I was having a great time in my life by securing good marks and winning many prizes.

One day, just out of the blue, my father received his transfer orders for another city. My family was happy as it was on promotion but I was shattered rather heartbroken on leaving my school. This change was difficult for me as a little girl and I cried no end in solitude. One day, my father saw me crying and asked me: Missing your friends/ your school? I replied: Yes. He knew that all this while I was putting on a bold front and now it was the time to let my tears flow.  I was in a new place, lonely and lost.

This change had shaken me deeper than anyone could realize. As goes the saying: Time is the biggest healer and as it passed, I made new friends and life came on track sooner than later…

This way we see that there is no point in crying as life has its healing mechanism which makes us adjust to the change/ grief.

However, there is an older translation from the German poet Ludwig Jacobowski which translates to:

Do not cry because they are past; smile because they once were!”

So be happy always!
