How to Overcome Negativity?

  • Are you the one forever immersed in negative thoughts?
  • Are you the one whose constant companion is negativity?
  • Does negativity follow you in any given situation?

Believe me, you are not in a good space. You are inviting trouble not only for your mental health but your physical health as well. You may be a victim of anxiety, depression, and negativity, besides diabetes and BP, etc. There is a need to address the scenario where you can shirk negativity whenever it occurs. Everybody has problems in life but your attitude defines them. If you can troubleshoot them with your cool demeanour, you are a winner, if you are in a reactionary mode, the problem compounds. The decision is in your own hands.

“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.”     -Willie Nelson

Negative affectivity (NA), or Negative affect, is a personality variable that involves the experience of negative emotions and poor self-concept. Negative affectivity subsumes a variety of negative emotions, including anger, contempt, disgust, guilt, fear, and nervousness.

So how do you define negativity? Or Negative emotions? These can be described as any feeling which causes you to be miserable and sad. These emotions make you dislike yourself and others, and reduce your confidence and self-esteem, and general life satisfaction.

Emotions that can become negative are hate, anger, jealousy, and sadness. Yet, in the right context, these feelings are completely natural. Negative emotions can dampen our enthusiasm for life, depending on how long we let them affect us and the way we choose to express them.

Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.”     -Carl G. Jung

How do you behave when negativity is circling in your head? As a first indication, negative emotions stop us from thinking and behaving rationally and seeing situations from their true perspective. When this occurs, we tend to see only what we want to see and remember only what we want to remember. This only prolongs the anger or grief and prevents us from enjoying life. The longer this goes on, the more set the problem becomes.

Dealing with negative emotions inappropriately can also be harmful – for example, expressing anger with violence.

What symbolizes rather defines negativity?

  • Anger
  • Emptiness
  • Frustration
  • Inadequacy
  • Helplessness
  • Fear
  • Guilt
  • Loneliness

What are immediate measures which can help you?

  • Focus on what you are feeling right now. If you are sad, feel the sadness
  • Share your feelings with someone close to you.
  • Do something nice for yourself.
  • Take time to count your blessings.
  • Eat well.
  • Make social connections.

Emotions are complex reactions

Emotions are complex reactions involving many biological and physiological processes within our bodies. Our brain responds to our thoughts by releasing hormones and chemicals, which send us into a state of arousal. All emotions come about in this way, whether positive or negative. It is a complex process and often we do not have the skills to deal with negative feelings. That is why we find it hard to cope when we experience them.

You can deal with negative emotions in many ways. These include:

  • Not blowing things out of proportion by going over them time and again in your mind.
  • By being reasonable – you need to accept that bad feelings are occasionally unavoidable and think of ways to make yourself feel better.
  • By relaxing your agitated nerves – you can use pleasant activities like reading, walking, or talking to a friend.
  • Need to learn how grief, loss, and anger make you feel, and which events trigger those feelings so you can prepare in advance.
  • Prepare an exercise schedule – aerobic activity lowers your level of stress chemicals and allows you to cope better with negative emotions.
  • Finally – let go of the past – constantly going over negative events robs you of the present and makes you feel bad.

There is nothing bad about being “Negative.” It happens naturally to all of us sometimes that we undergo roller – coaster ride of emotions. We are ecstatic when we are happy and we are depressed when things are not going our way. But this should not persist for long, we need to balance it out by remaining calm and composed in any given situation. Life is not a bed of roses. We need to deal with its demands with Elan.

One great way to make headway in the direction, you are struggling with negative thoughts and feelings is to find someone close to you and talk. Not only can this help you vent, but this also can be a great opportunity to reframe negative thoughts in a more positive light.

If that is not happening, find a way to lend a helping hand. This way you can deal with negative thoughts by focusing on helping someone else. By helping someone else, you allow yourself to bring positivity into your life. Whether it be helping someone move or merely listening to a friend, helping someone else is a great way to help yourself.

This way come out of negativity, embrace happiness, and HappyHO.
