Packing, Working, Mothering, Training, and Finally Losing It

It’s happened.

I think I’ve finally hit my breaking point. Yeah, yeah, I know — I’m busy. I do “too much”. I am overcommitted. But I haven’t reached maximum capacity. Until now. And as you read this, I’m on a plane out of the country for work. Leaving things undone that I wanted to get done before I left.

I tried, I seriously did… but I ran out of time.

I get asked a lot “how do you fit it all in?”. The answer is usually easy – I like to stay busy and am usually firing on all cylinders from when I wake up early morning until I go to sleep late at night. As you read on my recent post “A Day in the Life of a Multisport Mom“, I don’t sleep enough and my days are packed. But I usually like it that way, and then I make sure I balance it with good times with friends, my kids, and my much-valued downtime.

But the past week? I confess that I finally hit overload. I’m not sure if I’ve ever said that before, but I am at capacity. Overdone. Maxed out.

There. I said it.

You’re either proud of me for confessing it, or saying “I told you so”. Either way – it happened.

Like I said, as you read this, I’m on a plane to Russia for a business trip for the week. I have 150 people with me, and the preparations for this Trip have been intensely complicated. I’ll be offline during the trip, focusing on making sure the trip goes smoothly, and have some great guest posts from friends lined up for the blog.

But timing is everything.

At the same time, I have a lot going on with my kids. My daughter is in a musical theater production at the local high school. She’s in 5th grade but they had elementary school students audition for parts, so she’s been busy with that. I won’t get to see the show since it’s this week and I’m away, but I’m hoping I get to see a video of her solo. My boys are ever-active and in need of quality mom-time and we’ve had some good times together this week in between everything else. I prioritized them.

And again, at the same time, my Ironman Lake Placid training is ramping up. I’ll admit that this week was a bit tough for workouts since I worked a lot and had so much to do getting ready to leave the country. I tried to get done what I could and hope it didn’t derail my overall training.

Also at the same time, I’m the Race Director for the Pike’s Peek 10K, and it’s in a month! So now is the time that a lot of the planning kicks into full force. Thankfully, we have a great team who are dedicated and know what they are doing in their areas, but it’s still been a lot of extra work and a lot of emails, phone calls, and meetings for me. I had a ton of in-person meetings just at a time when time was running scarce – meetings about Start Line, with the Department of Transportation, a Finish Line walk through, and a big team meeting. The timing couldn’t have been worse with everything else going on, but I didn’t mind. I love-love-love it and want the race to go well. It just was a lot at a time when everything else was… a lot also.

That’s the exact spot of the Pike’s Peek 10K Finish Line!

So where does that leave me?

Pretty darn tired. And stressed.

I wish I still had a working Fitbit since my sleep tracking would be absolutely fascinating right now. I might be getting four hours a night, but I’m not entirely sure I’m even getting that.

When I’m back next week, you can find me sitting in a dark, quiet room for a day before I re-emerge to my usual life…

Wow, I hope this wasn’t too negative. And I wondered whether to post this at all. But I hope it goes to show that I’m not a superhero or a robot. Everything converged on me at once and I am working my way through all that has to be done. I just need more hours in the day.

I’ll be offline this week during the trip but hope to have some great photos and stories to share, especially of fitting in workouts while traveling. I’ll have a way to post to Instagram from the road. And I have some great guest posts lined up so be sure to check them out and visit the bloggers who are posting here!
