They Say You Want A Revolution: We Are The Spoken

You may have noticed a few changes around here. Here’s the thing: we’re on the brink of a revolution. Actually, the revolution has already happened. Cycle Exif has died. Long live Cycle EXIF. But it has already risen again. We are The Spoken.

Over the last few months, humanity has been undergoing some radical changes and it’s not the end. We’re in the process of a major social upheaval which hasn’t yet reached its apex. It’s a dynamic situation which is only a tiny part of the process.

Change happens in cycles. It’s something that we cyclists are inherently aware of: Winter to Summer, fast to slow, old to new. We become aware of it every time we throw a leg over the Bike and turn the pedals. The bicycle is a vehicle for change and we are riding it.

Just recently, Cycle EXIF celebrated ten years of celebrating beautiful bicycles and we came to the realisation that the world no longer needs galleries of drool-worthy bikes: we need inspiration for a better tomorrow.

It seems the planet has all the ingredients for a huge social and environmental shift, which is being held back only by a few stupid white men in power. Well, it won’t be long before nature will force them out so we can get on with the next phase.

Bikes are going to be a major part of the new transport solution, both for the modern city and for those wanting to reconnect with what is left of the natural world — which we are all intrinsically connected to and with which we must reconnect in order to survive.

The Spoken will be here to document it. Over the last few years, we discovered we got more kicks from featuring a wider range of bikes — from the priceless carbon fibre uber-lightweight roadie one day to the legendary reliable pub bike the next.

You’re going to see more cargo bikes, utilitarian bikes, omafiets and mamachari. We’re pushing for innovation and clever solutions to bike design, urban architecture, products and concepts that make riding easier for everyone, both off-road and on.

The Spoken is going to look beyond the bicycle to learn just how diverse the two-wheeled world really is. There will be no room for prejudice and the only bit of kit you’ll need is an open mind.

An open mind will be required to appreciate and respect the beauty in every bike — even eBikes and their role in tomorrow’s cycleways and trails. One Less Car will be a useful maxim to remember here.

There’s going to be book reviews, visits to galleries to meet with cycling artists, news, interviews and travel diaries. Probably even politics and placards. We want to see some change. You won’t get bored, that’s for sure.

It will be a gradual, almost imperceptible change, but we’re looking at the bigger picture and we’re excited about the future of cycling and the world. Don’t get us wrong, we won’t be foregoing our appreciation of classic racers.

We’ll still document the classic road and mountain bike, as well as the crappy old ten-speed. They all have a place on The Spoken, alongside the latest advances in materials and technology. As far as we’re concerned, steel is still real.

We will always champion the handmade over mass production, so you’ll still be able to admire the work of the world’s most experienced frame builders, as well as the hobbyist. We’re surrounded by an incredibly vibrant culture and industry.

We’re going on an adventure and we’d love for you to come along for the ride. There’ll be something for everyone. This is your voice. Our voice. Thanks for sharing the journey with us this far.
