The self-assured dignity instilled within each Stanforth is likely the same that permeates the former Savile Row headquarters of the Royal Geographical Society. But don’t be fooled by this 650b Skyelander’s elegance, it’s built with circumnavigation in mind.

The British exploratory spirit is not lost on the brand’s founder, Simon Stanforth. The Crane cousins’ taming of Africa’s highest mountain by bicycle is the original inspiration for Stanforth Bikes and the first Model was named Kibo, after Kilimanjaro’s summit.

The Skyelander (named for Simon’s own touring experiences in the Highlands and The Isle of Skye) was originally the classic lugged and leggy 700c model, created for road-and-load touring. This newer 650b model, however, has a few modern refinements.

Thru-axle dropouts and flat mounts for disc brakes have been added to the frame, which is fillet brazed rather than lugged. The Reynolds 631 tubes are finished in a deep rich burgundy — you can also choose Reynolds 853 or Compass/Rene Herse Mule tubing.

Each Stanforth model has a good amount of custom options available, from extra bosses for Compass tail lights to geometry and trail. They’re also constructed by some of the UK’s most experienced frame builders — a reliable tool for the modern explorer.
