Hopping Rad: Paul Components Sierra Klunker

After last year’s collaboration, it’s now no longer any secret that the crew at Paul Components and the Sierra Nevada Brewery enjoy each other’s company. This year, they continue to push the boundaries of their relationship with another heady brew.

The previous project was a funky 26” BMX frame supplied by Squid Bikes dressed to the nines with custom green anodized parts from White Industries, Velocity and, of course, Paul Components themselves.

It was called the Sierra Shredder and it almost broke the internet. This year has been no different: the Sierra Klunker was released to the press yesterday and it seems every bike site and social media channel now has a green hoppy hue to it.

Paul’s base of Chico, CA, is also home to Chris Inglis and Retrotec Cycles, who built them a signature swoopy-tubed, klunker-inspired frameset which was promptly covered with a dark green candy flake base and hops motif.

White Industries provided the cranks, ring, and freewheel, Oddity made a pair of their wide moto-style bars, Oakland’s Pass & Stow sent a rack, and Velocity a pair of Dually rims. Oner sent over an eccentric bottom bracket.

The whole lot was anodized in Pale Ale Green, while Paul created a double-slab crate for the rack from Chinese Pistachio wood, which grows prolifically around Chico. Copper brackets reference the kettles at the Sierra Nevada Brewery.

Apparently, Paul Price (the Paul in Paul Components) has lunch at the brewery every day, so it mustn’t be a bad place to hang out. If you think the Sierra Klunker would be nice to hang out with every day, you could win it — after it’s been shown off at NAHBS this weekend. Stay tuned for more details.
