How does Maven work?

Maven Carsharing – What is Maven?

Need to rent a car in the Big Apple? Well now there’s a new, easier way to navigate New York, and it’s called Maven Rideshare.

Maven is a car-sharing service spin off from General Motors, and recently launched in Manhattan in May 2017. It started off with approximately 80 available vehicles, for both hourly and daily reservations.

Since its inception, Maven Rideshare has launched in 17 cities both in the US and Canada and to date has garnered 39,000 members with more than 50,000 reservations on the app.

Maven brings the ease of smartphone technology to the car-renting business. Amongst the available vehicle types, Maven customers can rent:

  • Buick Encore;
  • Cadillac ATS
  • Cadillac XT5
  • Chevy Cruze
  • Chevy Equinox
  • Chevy Malibu
  • Chevy Traxs
Maven Carsharing: the Basics

Maven is an attempt by General Motors to target millennials who have turned to technology (and away from personal car ownership).

Maven’s ridesharing service, unlike many others, includes gas (along with auto insurance), built into its membership fee. Registering is easy, and simply involves filling out a personal information survey that asks a series of basic questions (customer name; phone number; address; and email address, along with the region you want to rent the car in). Once potential customers complete the registration process, they can be approved to reserve a car in as little as 10 minutes (although, in some cases, the process can take up to two days).

Like Zipcar, and other car-sharing services, Maven is relatively inexpensive (with an hourly rate between $6.00 – $12.00, depending on the vehicle selected).

Signing up for Maven Rideshare

Once approved, Maven Rideshare has an easy four step process for getting a car and getting on the road.  The first step involves heading to Maven’s website, in order to sign up for an official membership. Then, users head to the app store (located on their smartphones) in order to download and install the Maven Rideshare app.

Once the app is installed – and once their Maven membership application is approved – members can then choose their preferred vehicle type from a range of options.

Choosing a car

The app gives a list of nearby cars in the area, and the user then selects a car based on what type of car they want (and where they are). Maven Rideshare allows users to select eco-friendly cars, sedans, compact cars and SUVs. Maven also allows users to choose everything from leather seats, interior preferences, type of power, and much more. Maven offers Sedans for just $8.00 an hour (but the service reminds users that car brands; styles; and prices vary significantly, depending on the user’s neighborhood).

Picking up your car, and dropping it off

The next step is getting in your car… and driving!

The Maven App will provide users with information on where they’re heading, and how to get there (entirely separate from the embedded map on your smartphone). Maven’s system will monitor your progress, and give you helpful information and insights along the way.

Once finished with your trip, the fourth (and final) step is simply dropping your Maven vehicle off back where it was originally picked up. When the car is returned, the user presses ‘end’ on the app – and the trip (and vehicle reservation) is then marked as completed on Maven’s system.

Like Turo, Maven is heading into a competitive market, offering a modern way to rent cars to a growing audience of drivers who eschew private vehicle ownership. So far, with its recent market successes, Maven intends to continue expanding its vehicle portfolio, with expectations of reaching new cities in 2017 and beyond.
