Are Sky Mobile Phones Unlocked?

There was once a time when carriers used to lock devices to their network and charge customers for the luxury to take them to another network when their contract was up — but that’s no longer the case. UK communications regulator Ofcom banned the sale of locked handsets in December 2021, meaning all Sky Mobile devices are unlocked. This includes tablets as well, like the Apple iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

In fact, you can use Sky Mobile to finance a new phone without ever starting a cellular contract with the company. When buying a device through Sky, the contract is added second. You’ll be shown the price for the handset first, which can be spread over 12 or 24 months. The next step is to choose a tariff. You can select a 100MB SIM for free. This will ship in the box with the device. Just set it aside and pop in your own one.

You’ll then be paying monthly for the handset itself; there are no charges for a cellular connection. This is ideal for customers who have been grandfathered in to very cheap SIM-only plans that are no longer available, who are looking for a new phone but want to spread the cost. You can also use Sky Mobile to finance accessories like the Apple Watch and even cases and covers for your handset as well.
