Syed Alwi Road has a rich heritage and is said to be an architectural feast. Students of architecture can admire the decorative wall tiles, window openings, arches, columns and pilasters of shophouses built from the late 1800s to the 1960s in a range of styles. We cannot tell the difference between a column and a pilaster but we are glad that in one of the colourful shophouses along Syed Alwi Road we can eat sumptuously and cheaply. 传统大连面家 Da Lian Traditional Noodles at Syed Alwi Road serves a good bowl of Teochew minced pork noodles or bak chor mee and we like their satay bee hoon too; and it is open all day and all night.

Soup & Noodles at Syed Alwi Road

大连面家 Da Lian Traditional Noodles occupies several shophouses along Syed Syed Alwi Road. The corner shophouse is the food preparation area. You go there to order and pay for your food. Da Lian Traditional Noodles at Syed Alwi sells fishball and fish dumpling soup as well as oyster soup, claypot abalone and laksa. However, 2 of their more popular dishes are the Teochew minced pork noodles and satay bee hoon. The menu is on the wall and on the cashier’s counter and you can also design your own bowl of noodles or soup by picking your own ingredients, yong tau hu style.

Curbside Dining & Air-conditioned Hall

Da Lian Traditional Noodles at Syed Alwi has seats by the roadside for a real curbside dining experience. There are also tables in one of the shophouses for those who prefer air-conditioned comfort. It is a free seating system. You find your own table; and share table if necessary.

When we ordered our food we were given a number tag to be placed on the table we had chosen. The food and drinks were served to the table. The service was friendly and efficient.

Teochew Minced Pork Noodles

We ordered the dry version of the Teochew minced pork noodles ($4.50), with one of us opting for mee kia and the other going for mee pok. We also ordered the satay bee hoon ($5).

The inviting aroma of the bowl of Teochew minced pork noodles or bak chor mee was the first thing that caught our attention.

The noodles came with fishballs, fish cakes, fish dumplings, mushrooms, meatballs and minced pork. The ingredients were fresh and the fishballs were quite bouncy. The noodles had the right texture; springy and not too soft. The vinegar sauce gave the dish a tantalising flavour but it was the secret recipe chilli paste that really gave the dish a real kick.

We thought the mee kia was just slightly better than the mee pok but both were enjoyable.  We liked the piping hot soup served on the side. The lightly seasoned broth was very flavourful.

Satay Bee Hoon

The satay bee hoon was not meant to be a feast for the eyes. Covered by the satay sauce was all sorts of ingredients, including fresh prawns, squids, cockles, tau pok and pork slices. Da Lian’s satay bee hoon also had pineapple slices, which we would not usually find in satay bee hoon elsewhere. The bee hoon was nicely cooked so that it was soft but still retained a good bite. The satay sauce was delicious and we liked the tangy taste of lime juice added to a corner of the dish. It was one of the best versions of satay bee hoon we had eaten recently.

Cheap & Good 24 Hours a Day

大连面家 Da Lian Traditional Noodles at Syed Alwi Road is open 24 hours a day. It is a good place for cheap and good food any time of the day or night – whether for breakfast before embarking on the Jalan Besar Heritage Trail or late night supper after studying the architectural elements of the clubs and bars in and around the colourful Syed Alwi Road.
