Detroit Realities #767

30 years ago, Pietro Puma was robbed, stabbed, and murdered by a co-worker Mathew Makowski at a Vic Tanny’s health club in Dearborn. In 2010, bungling Governor Granholm accidentally commuted Makowski’s life sentence and then days later tried to revoke her error. The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that she could not. The Puma family sued the Michigan Parole Board for abusing their discretion in granting Makowski parole, that they were not allowed to be heard. But Detroit Judge Martha Snow ruled that Makowski is to be released. The family is appalled and the Detroit area is now in danger from this killer that has already been threatening the family from prison.

Two Detroiters had their convictions tossed by the Wayne County Conviction Integrity Unit. 39-year-old Michael Powels was found guilty in 2007 of 2nd degree murder with such poor and fake evidence the prosecutor tossed the case. 45-year-old Kevin Lackey had his 1993 rape conviction tossed when all they had were invalid dog tracking evidence. What would you do with your new freedom? Just hours later, Lackey was arraigned for assaulting his girlfriend at gunpoint – which includes several felonies!

Federal Inspectors are looking at DMC-Sinai Grace hospital after a Detroit woman needlessly died because a lack of electricity prevented doctors from performing a life-saving treatment. She was eventually transferred to another hospital but died along the way. Either their backup electricity is grossly insufficient or they should have turned away patients that may need a procedure or elevator to get the care they need. The ambulance could have routed her to a functioning Detroit hospital.

In the scam of the day, Tara Lee of Macomb County has been charged by the FBI for running a fraudulent and unlicensed adoption agency that just collects tens of thousands for babies that do not exist. They have found 80 victims in 26 states that Lee has defrauded.

Hurray – Detroit Police captured 28-year-old fugitive Anthony Gilchrist. What is this fine young man’s criminal history? Home invasions, stealing firearms, parole violations, and his latest – armed robbery of 2 women in Corktown Detroit, caught on video chasing them as he re-loads his handgun.

The Christmas Eve sinkhole in Macomb County 2 years ago has been determined to be human error. While workers were re-lining a sewer, they released a flow of water hundreds of times greater than protocol allows, blasting the area with water which caused a massive sinkhole causing damage to 11 communities and many homes.

TSA agents at Detroit Metro Airport are fake calling-in-sick, causing huge security backups at the airport.

His father says, “I’m more worried about the teacher because they were just trying to do their job. He told me he attacked her because she snitched on me about having drugs. I did not raise him like this and had no idea he had access to drugs.”
  • A Detroit EMS worker was severely bitten on the arm by a suicidal 17-year-old girl. The paramedic claims the police pawn off their job to us all the time, and so we get hurt.
  • Just south of Detroit in Wyandotte, a man was arrested after being caught crawling around in the storm drains, there were lots of beer cans around the manhole cover where he got it.
  • Detroiter Shawn Thomason was charged with stalking for putting a GPS tracker under the car of his ex-girlfriend in Hazel Park. He did not show up for his court date and is now a fugitive.
  • Two Eastepointe thieves were arrested after stealing the packages from 12 different homes in the area.
  • A 37-year-old woman in Hazel Park was stabbed to death by her boyfriend. The boyfriend’s other girlfriend had called police after he was acting strange after visiting her home. The victim had 2 young children.
  • Steve Nelson says he was harassed at his home by Westland Police after a road-rage shooting. He says he knew never heard a shooting, knows nothing about it and wouldn’t let them in without a warrant (they could not produce one). Nelson claims this is their retaliation because six weeks earlier, his son was found Not-Guilty in a shooting case. Nelson says he’s moving as fast as possible to move out of the Detroit area
  • U.S. Marshalls are searching for Detroiter Reginald Davis who shot his cousin and took 6 shots at his own daughter and her mother as she ran to her car after he became irate. He called police to say they’ll never find him. There is a cash reward for tips leading to his arrest.
