Microsoft has begun selling a new Surface Laptop that’s $200 Cheaper than the previous model. Windows Central was the first to report about the $799 model.

The older model, launched last year with the Surface Pro, costs $999.

The Verge reported that Microsoft did not say why it came out with a cheaper model but its introduction came a few days after the company disclosed that its revenue from Surface went up one percent only year-over-year in the holiday quarter.

Minimal Increase in Revenue

Both devices did not do a lot to hike revenue during the fourth quarter last year, which is that time of the year when companies expect product sales to go up.

TechCrunch, for its part, believes that Microsoft came out with the cheaper model to drum up sales after the Christmas holidays.

The cheaper Surface Laptop, according to Windows Central, has an Intel Core m3 SKU of the Surface Laptop with Windows 10 S, and “appears to only be available in Platinum for now, and in the U.S. only at this time.”

Ideal for Students

An Intel Core m3 is ideal for taking notes, surfing the web, emailing and basic daily tasks, so it is meant more for students or users who do a little bit of web browsing or checking of emails.

“It’s not a powerhouse by any means, and you may find that 4GB RAM to be quite limiting after a while,” Windows Central said.
