Decorating: What to Look for in a Christmas Tree

Tags: tree

Going out to shop for a Christmas Tree is a fun holiday tradition for many families. Once you get to the farm, you may choose a tree based on what your family feels is most aesthetically pleasing.

But there’s more to choosing a tree than how it looks. You want it to fit in your home and you want it to stay fresh throughout the season. With that in mind, here are some things to consider.

Choose the Location Where You Want the Tree

Before you start shopping, choose the location in your home where you want to place the tree. It should be kept away from heating sources like radiators, fireplaces, and even sun-drenched windows and TVs. You also want to avoid putting it in high traffic areas.

Once you have picked your spot, figure out how much space the tree can take up. Keep in mind that it may have a star on top putting it closer to the ceiling. This will let you know how big your tree can be.

Know What You Want in Advance

You should also determine what you’re looking for in a tree before you start shopping. For example, if you have pets or children at home, you may want one with softer needles such as fir or pine.

Keep in mind that trees have various hues ranging from white to gray to green. This can be another important factor in the decision-making process.

People tend to choose trees that are full and lush. However, trees like this may not have a lot of room for decorations. It is best to opt for one with space between its branches.

Look at the Tree from All Angles

When you are out shopping, step back 5 to 8 feet to check out the tree from all angles. It’s best to find a densely branched tree with good color, shape, and aroma. The trunk should be relatively straight, and it should not be visible through the foliage.

Check the Tree’s Freshness

The trunk of the tree will reveal its freshness. It should have a slight stickiness to it.

You can also bend its needles to tell how fresh it is. A fresh fir needle will snap while a white pine will bend, not break.

A fresh tree’s needles will not fall off easily. Gently grab a branch and pull it towards you or tap the branch on the ground. If a lot of needles fall off, move along.

A vibrant green color is another indicator of freshness.

Once the Tree is Home

You can maintain the tree’s freshness once you get home by taking care of its trunk.

Cut about a half-inch off the bottom or ask the farm to cut it for you before you take it home. This will allow it to absorb more water.

Place the tree in water ASAP after it’s cut and put it in a cool, dry place. Make sure its water is always filled.

Your Christmas tree is the centerpiece for your decorations. You want to pick a good one. The tips in this article will ensure you find the best one possible. What do you look for when you’re picking your tree?
