Tens of millions of Americans suffer from various Lung diseases, typically caused by smoking, infections and heredity. Here are the most common:
Lung cancer. The second leading cause of death after heart disease, Lung Cancer accounts for nearly 30% of all cancer deaths – claiming the lives of 158,000 Americans this year. More people die of lung cancer than of breast, colon and prostate cancer combined.
The chance of a man developing lung cancer in his lifetime is about 1 in 13; for a woman, it’s about 1 in 16. This includes both smokers and non-smokers.
Asthma. About 60% of asthma is brought on by allergens like mold or dust mites, affecting twice as many women as men.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, COPD is the third leading cause of death in the US. Between 10-20% of COPD patients are non-smokers.
Influenza and pneumonia. The flu, caused by a virus, is of greater risk to the very young, old and infirm. Pneumonia is a severe inflammation of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses or even fungi. Fluid builds up, lowering the amount of oxygen transported to the blood.
Extensive studies of vitamins, nutrients and herbs show promise for protecting healthy lung function.
