The Procedure
In SIPS surgery, the upper part of the stomach which is relatively thin and easily stretched is
removed, leaving behind a substantially smaller stomach pouch.
The intestinal length is shortened making the food consumed reach the end part of the intestine more rapidly. This process stimulates the cells in this region to release incretins that alter hunger and fullness and reduce the body’s uptake of calories from food consumed.
The procedure is similar to that of Roux en -Y gastric bypass surgery, but for one crucial difference. In SIPS, the pylorus/ pyloric valve is preserved. SIPS procedure was developed to alleviate the repercussions of the removal of pylorus that results in dumping syndrome, anastomotic ulcers, internal hernia etc
Case Studies
1. US national library of Medicine, National Institute of Health conducted a study on 225
patients who underwent SIPS bariatric surgery between 2013 and 2016. The results
suggested –
- On average, the procedure facilitates losing more than 26 BMI (Body Mass Index)
points at two years after surgery. It is an effective weight loss option - Complications were fewer with SIPS compared to other procedures
- The body corresponded better to diabetes resolution
- A comparison between the results of SIPS & Sleeve Gastrectomy at two years
showed SIPS led to 30% better weight loss at two years and increased resolution to
various co-existing morbid conditions. - The preservation of pylorus is a great advantage here. Pylorus controls solid
emptying; reduces the chance of dumping syndrome ( astate which manifests
abdominal discomfort, abnormal bowel evacuation, etc) and maintains a normal rate
of gastric emptying.
2. Stephanie Bergeron, an obese patient with diabetes and several other health issues, was
finding it hard to lose weight. She heard about various weight loss surgeries, but on her
doctor’s suggestion, she zeroed in on SIPS bariatric surgery. In Stephanie’s words “Life
hasn’t been the same since. I can now feel the benefit of exercise; my quality of life has
certainly improved, and I am down 88 pounds!”
3. Society of American Gastrointestinal & Endoscopic surgeons analysed 100 patients who
underwent SIPS procedure. The data of people who underwent laparoscopic sleeve
gastrectomy and laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass were compared with SIPS outcomes.
A 1-2 years analysis showed SIPS procedure is associated with a lower risk profile, an
equivalent nutrition status, and increased weight loss.
Get rid of obesity with SIPS, and get a new lease of life.
