Initially you can just start off with a minimalistic approach but as time passes by you need to excel in this field to survive and make a living out of it.

Here are some of the tips that can help Non-Designers Create their own website –

1. A balanced approach

Balance is everywhere. It’s an integral part of everything we do. Similarly, when we design a website we should look to strike a right balance with spacing, colors used and other basic parts of the layout. It must not be base-heavy or top-heavy. We need to achieve unity in whatever we are going to present. The visuals should not feel distorted to the onlooker. You must pay proper attention to the finer details like the continuation, rhythm and repetition so as to create a unified appeal. And unity does not necessarily come with symmetry. You can choose subtle asymmetrical designs that go together in unison.

2. Get inspired by everything around you

The best professionals in any field seek inspiration from the smallest of incidents around them. This is a trait that will help you achieve big in life. Even the highest earning individuals once got an inspiration from a small occurrence which motivated them to become what they are.

Take the example of Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon Inc. In the year 1994, he was the youngest ever senior vice president at the Wall Street Investment Banker – D.E. Shaw & Co. He was merely 30 years old and was already earning in six figures. He could have well settled with that for the rest of his life and still be wealthy enough. But he had other plans.

Jeff was once surfing the internet for his work-related purposes when he came across the fact that Internet usage was growing by 2300% a month. He had a love for electronic retailing and when he got to know about some tax benefits from the-then US Supreme Court, he started off with a virtual bookstore. And the rest is history.
Designing ideas come randomly in your head. Like you just woke up and realise that in your dream you looked at a shop and loved its colour scheme and you decide to incorporate the same in your website. It’s that easy. You just need to have a knack of paying attention and keeping your imagination flexible.

3. Follow minimalism

More often than not, non-designers get nervous and tend to make a mess of everything they know by implementing it in a single go. Rather minimalism should be followed. Find the right balance. The design should help the onlookers to concentrate on the more important aspects of your website. Take care of not divulging the mood of the reader. Failure is a part of the game. You will fail in things which you are new to. There will be mistakes. Take them in your stride. Don’t let them bring you down. Designing involves combining many contrasting elements with each other to make a synergy out of it. Keep trying. Success is not too far off.

4. Combine the right amount of positive space with negative space

If you are planning to make a bi-layered design, it is important to have the right balance between the positive and the Negative space. Positive space is the foreground whereas the negative space refers to the background of your website. A very wildly designed negative space can divert the mind of the reader and they may ignore the primary content. Whereas a very flat negative space may have the reader disinterested. You can create an illusion by overlapping, improving the shadow effects and the highlight effects. This will help in getting the readers more indulged in the content.

5. Get the right colour scheme

It is necessary to note that the niche of most websites can be determined by looking at their Colour accents. For example, social sites are mostly painted in blue like Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook, amongst others. Food brands normally follow vibrant colour schemes to give a positive vibe to the onlooker. You need to know your audience and create a colour palette according to the niche of the content you are going to provide. It has psychological benefits, helps in retaining customers and selling your products better. You need to choose that color which defines your brand objectives and is reminiscent of the same.

6. Create a design hierarchy

A proper hierarchy helps in guiding the reader to the content you want him to read. It has the power of subtly guiding the eyes of the viewer, sometimes sub-consciously to the things you want him to take note of. It can be achieved by a properly crafted negative space or through an interactive foreground. The design should be such that viewer gets to know what he needs to do w33ithout reading the instructions. It creates a good user experience. Being able to achieve this is 3an example of a good hierarchy.

7. Create a logo that describes your business

Did you ever see the Baskin Robbins logo and notice that their initials i.e. BR has two colour accents, one is blue and the other one is pink. When you dive deeper you will see ‘31’ in pink. It tells33 us that they have 31 flavours of Ice Cream. Have a look at the logo below-

A logo can either tell the whole story or nothing at all. While designing a website remember to design the logo in such a way that it tells a story, all by itself.

8. Proportion and Scale

If you want to maintain harmony among all the elements of your website, you must take care of the scale and proportion. The texts, motifs and other factors should play a significant role in enhancing viewer experience. If misused, it can lead to a reduction in the importance of your focal point. Similarly, if the scale of the elements is unusually larger or are unsuitable for the content you are trying to provide, it can lead to a loss in interest of the onlooker. Try to find a golden ratio which can enhance the aesthetic value without being a burden on the main content.

9. Smart use of contrast

Care must be taken that you are developing a uniform design for all the aspects of your website. It doesn’t mean that all the aspects should be visually similar, but without similarity in the key elements, it will be difficult for them to survive. You need to use contrast intelligently to add a visual appeal to your focal point. You can develop contrast by varying your website’s layout in terms of spacing, texture, colours used and density. This adds a niche to your design language. You can just play with these aspects to create something that looks and feels different.

10. Get the textures right

In a content, there will be some key points and some points which are being generally conveyed. We need to highlight the key points in such a way that the viewer pays attention to them. It can be done through the use of texture. You can use a different accent, or a different colour pattern to accentuate the key points. You must be careful while using the textures. Overdoing it will reduce its importance and tire the viewer’s eyes. It can have a negative impact on the message that you want to convey.

These simple tricks can help you to improve your website visually and to give a better consumer experience on a whole. Even though these points have covered almost all the aspects of website designing, there is always a lingering consideration – the cost. You can try various things to make your website look good but if you are not taking care of the cost involved, it will be difficult to survive in the longer run. Try and do things that are within your pocket and do them creatively so as to stand above the rest.
